Chapter 7 - The Fractured Loyalty

For three excruciating seconds, the only sound was the howling wind and the torrential rain pounding against the metal roofs. Adrián’s finger quivered on the trigger of his gun, his eyes darting frantically between Elena and the dark water tower in the distance.

"You won't shoot," Adrián hissed, though his voice lacked conviction. "If I die, my associates will hunt both of you down to the ends of the earth!"

"My brother spent four years in special operations before he became a journalist, Adrián," Elena replied coldly. "He doesn't miss. And as for your associates? They're already receiving a preview of your secret library right now."

At that exact moment, Adrián’s cell phone began buzzing violently in his pocket. Then the second hitman’s phone rang. Then the radio inside the SUV crackled to life with panicked chatter.

"Boss!" the surviving hitman shouted from behind the SUV, his face pale with horror as he stared at his phone screen. "Boss, what is this?! My boss from the syndicate just texted me! They say someone leaked your blackmail lists! They're saying you compromised the entire northern operations!"

Adrián's face drained of all color. "What?! No! That's impossible!"

Mateo had executed phase two of the upload—releasing specific target extracts directly to the mid-level cartel leaders whom Adrián had secretly documented. By showing the criminals that their attorney was keeping extortion dossiers on them, Mateo had turned Adrián’s own protectors into his most deadly hunters.

"You ruined yourself, Adrián," Elena said, taking another step forward. "You built a house of cards on betrayal, and now it's falling on your head."

Valeria saw her chance. With a burst of desperate energy, she bit down hard on Adrián's wrist.

"Argh!" Adrián screamed, dropping the gun.

Valeria shoved him away with all her strength and stumbled across the wet gravel toward her mother. Elena caught her in her arms, wrapping her coat around her daughter and shielding her with her own body.

"Get in the car!" Elena barked, pushing Valeria into the passenger seat of her sedan.

Adrián scrambled on the ground, retrieving his pistol, his face contorted in demonic rage. "You ruined my life! I'll butcher both of you!"

He raised his gun toward Elena, but before he could squeeze the trigger, the second hitman inside the SUV fired his own weapon—not at Elena, but straight into Adrián's shoulder.

"Traitor!" the hitman roared at Adrián. "The cartel wants you alive for questioning, Cárdenas!"

Adrián collapsed to his knees, gasping in pain as blood soaked his tailored suit. He looked up in sheer horror as his own hired security turned their weapons on him.

Elena didn't waste a second. She slammed her sedan into reverse, spun the wheel, and tore out of the train station lot, gravel spraying everywhere.

"Mateo! Get to the extraction point now!" Elena yelled into her radio.

"I'm right behind you, Elena," Mateo's voice came through. "I've already alerted Agent Vance. Federal agents are swarming Highway 54 as we speak."

As Elena accelerated onto the highway, she looked in her rearview mirror. Red and blue emergency lights were flashing in the distance, but they weren't local police—they were heavy federal transport vehicles closing in on the scene.

In the passenger seat, Valeria clutched her stomach, weeping hysterically. "Mom... the baby... I think... I think I'm having contractions!"

Elena's heart dropped into her throat.
