Chapter 2 - The Mask of Perfection

The door to the master suite swung open, and Adrián Cárdenas stepped inside. He was thirty-four, tall, impeccably groomed in a dark charcoal Armani suit, with sharp features and a smile that had convinced juries to acquit murderers. But as his dark eyes locked onto Elena standing beside his wife's bed, his expression tightened into a mask of cold arrogance.

"Elena," Adrián said, adjusting his cuff links with slow, deliberate precision. "I didn't realize we were hosting family tonight. It's almost midnight."

"I brought Valeria some soup and vitamins," Elena replied, her voice steady, betraying none of the fury raging inside her. "She wasn't feeling well."

Adrián walked deeper into the room, his shoes making heavy, rhythmical thuds on the hardwood floor. He didn't look at Valeria, who shrank smaller under the covers, avoiding his gaze entirely.

"That's very thoughtful of you," Adrián said, stopping just two feet from Elena. The faint scent of high-end scotch and expensive cigars clung to him. "But as you can see, Valeria needs rest. The doctor said stress is bad for the baby. I'm sure you understand that a quiet environment is best for my heir."

"Your heir?" Elena challenged, stepping directly into his personal space, refusing to back down. "She is a human being, Adrián. My daughter."

Adrián smiled—a chilling, hollow expression that didn't reach his eyes. "And she is my wife. Under this roof, my word is final. I appreciate your maternal concern, Elena, but Willow Ridge has strict security protocols regarding unannounced visitors after hours. I wouldn't want the guards to mistake you for a trespasser next time."

The veiled threat hung heavy in the air. Elena looked past him at Valeria, whose eyes were wide with nonverbal pleas for her mother to comply and leave safely.

"I'll be going," Elena said softly. She leaned down, kissed Valeria's forehead, and whispered close to her ear, "Lock the door the moment we step out. Keep your phone near you."

Elena turned and walked toward the door. Adrián followed her down the grand marble staircase, maintaining a polite, controlling proximity. As they reached the foyer, he opened the heavy door for her.

"Drive safely, Elena," Adrián said smoothly. "The roads get slick at night. It would be tragic if an accident happened to someone so dear to us."

"Accidents happen when people think they are invisible, Adrián," Elena replied, locking eyes with him. "But light always finds its way into the dark."

Without another word, Elena walked out into the pouring rain. She climbed into her modest sedan, started the engine, and drove past the security gates. The guards barely glanced at her as she exited. In wealthy neighborhoods like Willow Ridge, residents paid millions precisely so people would look the other way.

Elena drove three blocks down, pulled over onto a dark side street under the shadow of overhanging oak trees, and turned off her headlights. She sat in the darkness, watching her hands. They weren't shaking.

She checked her purse. Months ago, before Valeria realized her marriage was a gilded prison, she had given Elena a spare key to the service entrance behind the garage. Valeria had forgotten about it, but Elena had kept it on her keychain.

Elena looked at her watch. It read 12:15 AM.

She pulled out her phone and opened Adrián's public social media profile. A fresh post had just popped up—a photo of Adrián raising a glass of champagne at an elite charity gala in downtown Santa Fe, captioned: "Celebrating justice and victory with the finest."

The post was timed, a manufactured alibi or a scheduled upload. But Elena knew Adrián was currently home. Or was he?

Just then, Elena saw Adrián's sleek black Mercedes sports coupe pull out of the Willow Ridge gates at high speed, heading toward the highway. He was leaving again, likely returning to his late-night celebration or meeting one of his high-profile clients.

Elena took a deep breath, shifted her car into gear, and executed a silent U-turn.
