Chapter 16 - Shadows of the Past

Six months passed. The cottage in the tranquil coastal town of Puerto Vallarta had become a sanctuary for Elena, Valeria, and baby Elena. Far away from the political corruption and dark memories of Metepec, life had settled into a gentle, beautiful rhythm.

Valeria had enrolled in an online master’s program in child psychology, turning her personal trauma into a mission to help other survivors of domestic abuse. Mateo’s book, *The Blacklight Files*, had become an international bestseller, shedding light on systemic judicial reform across Latin America.

However, peace is often tested before it becomes permanent.

On a warm Tuesday afternoon, while Valeria was taking baby Elena for a stroller walk along the beach boardwalk, Elena was in the front yard tending to her rose bushes. A sleek silver sedan pulled up slowly beside the curb.

Elena paused, her hand hovering over her pruning shears, her instincts immediately sharpening.

The car door opened, and an elderly man in an elegant linen suit stepped out. He walked with a polished silver cane, his white hair impeccably combed. He had an undeniable air of immense authority, but his eyes were filled with solemn restraint.

"Doña Elena Fuentes?" the man asked in a deep, gravelly voice.

"Who are you?" Elena asked, stepping out from the garden path, keeping the metal shears firmly in her hand.

"My name is Don Fernando Cárdenas," the old man said, inclining his head respectfully. "I am Adrián's father."

Elena’s heart tightened instantly. She knew of Don Fernando. He was a legendary retired supreme court justice who had cut all ties with Adrián fifteen years ago after discovering his son’s ruthless, dishonest ambition.

"If you are here to plead for your son, Don Fernando," Elena said sharply, "you are wasting your time. He belongs in prison."

"I am not here to plead for him, Elena," Don Fernando replied, his voice heavy with genuine remorse. "Adrián is a disgraced criminal, and he deserves every year of his life sentence. I disowned him long ago, though I forever bear the burden of failing to raise a good man."

Elena lowered her shears slightly, observing the old man's sincere sorrow. "Then why are you here?"

Don Fernando reached into his coat pocket and pulled out an ornate leather portfolio, extending it toward Elena.

"I am seventy-eight years old, Elena," Don Fernando said softly. "My family line was corrupted by my son, but my granddaughter carries innocent blood. Inside this portfolio is the deed to the entire Cárdenas ancestral trust—properties, clean investments, and educational funds built by my father long before Adrián was born. I have legally transferred everything directly to my granddaughter, Elena, under Valeria's sole guardianship."

Elena stared at the portfolio, stunned by the gesture.

"I don't want my granddaughter to grow up believing her father's bloodline was only dark," Don Fernando whispered, a tear trickling down his wrinkled cheek. "I want her to have the future her mother fought so hard to give her."
