Chapter 17 - Into the Lion's Den

The rain hammered against the reinforced glass of the crane control booth like a barrage of small stones.
Caleb stood in the doorway, drenched in water and sweat, his father's police shield keychain swinging gently from his vest. He didn't raise his weapon. He simply looked at Frank Thorne with eyes that carried the weight of an entire family's stolen peace.
"Shoot then, Frank," Caleb said, his voice terrifyingly calm amidst the howling storm.
Thorne's hand shook. The heavy gold Magnum wavered. "You think I won't? I built this city! I bought every judge, every cop, every senator! You're nothing! You're an eighteen-year-old nobody from a broken garage!"
"You didn't build this city," Caleb replied, taking one slow, deliberate step forward. "You bled it dry. You poisoned its streets, corrupted its laws, and murdered honest men who tried to protect their families. You think power comes from fear, Thorne. But fear always runs out."
"Shut up!" Thorne screamed, cocking the heavy hammer back.
"Eighteen years ago, my father stood in an alley on 4th Street," Caleb continued, stepping even closer until the barrel was touching his chest. "He had a chance to shoot Marcus Hale, but he chose mercy. He gave a warning because he believed people could be saved. You shot him in the back because you were too weak to face a real man."
"I am the law in Westbridge!" Thorne roared, his finger tightening on the trigger.
*VROOOOOOM!*
A blinding white searchlight suddenly pierced through the storm, bathing the control booth in daylight intensity.
The colossal horn of a United States Coast Guard cutter blasted across the bay, followed by the deafening thrum of three FBI tactical helicopters hovering fifty feet above the pier.
Loudspeakers thundered from the heavens:
*"Frank Thorne! This is the Federal Bureau of Investigation! Drop your weapon immediately! The pier is secured by federal tactical teams! Drop the weapon or you will be neutralized!"*
Below on the docks, dozens of federal agents in tactical gear poured from armored gunboats, systematically disarming and arresting Thorne's remaining mercenaries.
Thorne looked out the window at the overwhelming armada of federal justice. His empire, built on thirty years of blood and corruption, was crumbling into dust in front of his eyes.
"No..." Thorne whispered, tears of manic rage spilling down his cheeks. "No! I won't go to prison! I'll take you with me!"
Thorne began to pull the trigger.
In a fraction of a second, Caleb slapped the Magnum's barrel upward toward the ceiling as it discharged with a deafening crack. In the same motion, Caleb delivered a sharp, decisive strike to Thorne's jaw, sending the billionaire kingpin crashing unconscious onto the control room floor.
Caleb picked up the fallen Magnum, emptied the cylinder into his palm, and tossed the empty weapon onto Thorne's chest.

"You're done, Frank," Caleb whispered. "Justice is finally served."
