Chapter 23 - Marcus Hale's Choice

Two days later, Marcus Hale stood before the federal sentencing judge for his role in the Westbridge bank robbery.
Because Marcus had actively disarmed his partner, prevented bloodshed, saved hostages, and provided the critical testimony that dismantled the syndicate, the federal prosecutor and Caleb Reed jointly petitioned the court for leniency.
Caleb took the podium to speak on Marcus's behalf.
"Your Honor," Caleb addressed the judge, "eighteen years ago, my father gave Marcus Hale a warning: he told him he still had a choice to do good. It took Marcus eighteen years to fulfill that choice, but when the moment came, he risked his life to save mine. My father always believed in second chances. If the law has no room for redemption, then justice is nothing more than revenge."
The judge wiped his glasses, visibly moved by the young man's words.
"Marcus Hale," the judge pronounced, "in light of your extraordinary cooperation and heroic actions during the bank incident, this court sentences you to three years at a minimum-security facility, with eligibility for work-release parole in twelve months."
Marcus wept openly at the defense table, mouthing the words *Thank you* to Caleb across the aisle.
