Chapter 18 - The Kingpin's Offer

Twenty minutes later, the storm began to break as the first golden rays of dawn filtered through the clouds over Westbridge Harbor.
FBI SWAT teams swarmed *The Northern Star*, securing all forty shipping containers filled with contraband weapons. Medics treated Detective Lucas Miller for minor shrapnel cuts, while Sarah Vance coordinated the mass arrest processing of sixty-four syndicate operatives.
Down on the pier, handcuffed in federal custody, Frank Thorne sat on the tailgate of an ambulance. As Caleb walked past to assist the medical team, Thorne called out with raspy desperation:
"Caleb! Wait! Listen to me!"
Caleb stopped and turned around.
Thorne leaned forward, his face bruised and swollen. "I have two hundred million dollars in offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands and Switzerland. I'll give you the account numbers and private keys right now. You can take the money and leave this country. You can live like a king anywhere in the world! Just tell the feds that the server files were corrupted! Tell them you forged the ledger!"
Caleb looked at the once-all-powerful kingpin with profound pity.
"You still don't understand, do you, Thorne?" Caleb said quietly.
"Understand what? It's two hundred million dollars! It's more money than your family would make in ten lifetimes!"
"My father didn't wear that badge for money," Caleb replied, holding up the brass police crest. "He wore it because he believed a man's honor is the only thing he takes to the grave. Keep your blood money, Thorne. You're going to need it to buy commissary soup in federal maximum security."
Caleb turned his back and walked away into the morning light.
Thorne screamed curses into the wind until FBI agents pulled a hood over his head and loaded him into an armored transport van.
Sarah Vance walked up beside Caleb, watching the convoy drive away. "The United States Attorney just signed the arrest warrant for my father. He surrendered at City Hall ten minutes ago without resistance."
Caleb looked at her with deep empathy. "I'm sorry about your father, Sarah."

Sarah wiped away a tear, but her eyes held a steady, peaceful pride. "Don't be. My father made his choice decades ago. Today, we chose truth. And for the first time in eighteen years, this city can finally breathe."
