Chapter 6 - Secrets in the Badge Box

Midnight wrapped the working-class neighborhood of East Westbridge in thick, damp fog.

Caleb unlocked the door to his small, rundown apartment above his uncle's garage. The interior was modest—a single bed, a kitchen table cluttered with mechanical parts, and shelves lined with criminal law textbooks and tactical training manuals.

For six years, since turning twelve, Caleb had dedicated every waking hour outside of work to uncovering the truth behind his father's death. The police had closed the file as a 'random street mugging gone wrong.' But Caleb had known better.

He walked to the corner of his bedroom, knelt down, and pulled up a loose floorboard.

From the hidden compartment, he retrieved an old, dented steel ammo box. Inside lay Daniel Reed's personal belongings from that fateful night: his service sidearm (cleaned and oiled), a worn leather journal filled with coded investigation notes, and an audio cassette tape labeled *OPERATION SHADOWFALL*.

Caleb sat at his desk and inserted the cassette into an old battery-powered player.

He pressed play. The tape hissed with static, followed by the deep, steady voice of his father:

*"Audio log, October 14th. Officer Daniel Reed recording. If you are listening to this, I didn't make it back from the 4th Street dock inspection. Frank Thorne's syndicate has compromised the department from the top down. Commissioner Vance has authorized off-the-record shipments through warehouse 12. I've left the secondary encryption keys inside the safe behind my locker at the old 5th Precinct. Caleb... if you ever hear this... I'm sorry I couldn't be there to watch you grow up. Live with honor. Never let fear decide who you are."*

The recording clicked off.

A solitary tear ran down Caleb's cheek, but his jaw remained locked in granite resolve.

Suddenly, a floorboard creaked outside on the wooden staircase.

Caleb didn't hesitate. He grabbed his father's service pistol, chambered a round with a smooth, silent slide, and moved like a shadow behind the heavy wooden door.

The doorknob rattled. A slim wire picked the lock in three seconds.

The door swung open, and a silhouetted figure in a tactical hoodie stepped inside, raising a silenced pistol.

Before the assassin could sweep the room, Caleb slammed the heavy door into the man's arm, disarming him with a brutal wrist-lock takedown learned through years of krav maga training. The intruder crashed to the floor with a groan, Caleb's knee planted squarely against his throat and the cold barrel of Daniel Reed's gun pressed against his forehead.

"Who sent you?" Caleb demanded in a cold whisper.

The assassin gasped for air under the crushing weight. "Thorne... Thorne said... no loose ends..."

May you like

"Tell Thorne," Caleb whispered into the man's ear, "that his last warning just expired."
