Chapter 20 - The Breach at Midnight

The following week, the grand jury proceedings began at the Westbridge Federal Courthouse under unprecedented military-grade security.
Over thirty corrupt officials, including Commissioner Walter Vance, Deputy Chief Sterling, four superior court judges, and Frank Thorne himself, sat in the defendants' dock facing over two hundred counts of racketeering, arms trafficking, public corruption, and murder conspiracy.
In the witness holding room, Marcus Hale sat quietly in a clean blue suit provided by the Department of Justice.
The door opened, and Caleb stepped inside.
"They're calling your name next, Marcus," Caleb said.
Marcus looked down at his hands, his fingers trembling slightly. "I've been running from this room for eighteen years, Caleb. What if the jury only sees a criminal?"
Caleb walked over, pulled a chair beside him, and placed a steady hand on Marcus's shoulder.
"When you were in that bank with a loaded gun, you had every reason to shoot and run," Caleb said. "Instead, you put yourself between your partner's rifle and me. You saved my life, Marcus. You saved Arthur Pendelton's life. True courage isn't never making a mistake—it's having the guts to stand up and make things right when the whole world is watching."
Marcus took a deep, shuddering breath, looked into Caleb's eyes, and nodded with tears of redemption.
"I won't let your father down again," Marcus said firmly.

"I know you won't," Caleb smiled. "Now go out there and tell the truth."
