Chapter 28 - Badge and Honor

Across the courtyard, Marcus Hale stood near the oak trees, waiting quietly so as not to interrupt the family celebrations.
Caleb walked over to him, his uniform gleaming in the afternoon sun.
"Officer Reed," Marcus said with deep respect, extending his hand. "I... I wasn't sure if I should come today. I didn't want to bring back bad memories."
Caleb took Marcus's hand and pulled him into a warm, brotherly embrace.
"You didn't bring bad memories, Marcus," Caleb said earnestly. "You're proof that my father's philosophy was right. A man can change his life if he's given one last chance."
Marcus wiped away a tear, nodding with deep, humbled peace. "I got a job at your uncle's auto repair shop starting Monday. He said he could use an honest mechanic."
Caleb laughed warmly. "Uncle Joe is the best. You'll do great work there, Marcus."
"Thank you, Caleb. For everything."
