Chapter 19 - A Promise Made in the Rain

At Westbridge Memorial Hospital, the afternoon sun filled the recovery ward with warm, gentle light.
Arthur Pendelton sat up in his hospital bed, color fully restored to his face, holding his daughter Evelyn's hand. When the door opened and Caleb walked in carrying a small bouquet of wildflowers, Arthur's face lit up with profound emotion.
"There he is," Arthur smiled, his voice thick with gratitude. "The young man who wouldn't let an old fool die on a bank floor."
"How are you feeling, Mr. Pendelton?" Caleb asked, setting the flowers on the nightstand.
"The cardiologists say I'll be back at my desk in two weeks," Arthur said, reaching out to grasp Caleb's hand with surprising strength. "Caleb, Evelyn told me everything that happened. What you did at the bank... and what you did at the docks last night. You saved this entire city, son."
"I just finished what my father started, sir," Caleb replied modestly.
Evelyn stood up and wrapped her arms around Caleb in a tight, heartfelt embrace. "You're a hero, Caleb Reed. Don't you dare let anyone tell you otherwise."
Caleb felt a warmth in his chest that he hadn't experienced in eighteen years. For his entire life, his name had been associated with tragedy, grief, and an unsolved murder. Now, for the first time, the name Reed meant hope.
"What will you do now, Caleb?" Evelyn asked, looking into his eyes. "The mechanic shop?"
Caleb looked out the hospital window toward the police memorial plaza in the center of the city.

"I have a promise to keep," Caleb smiled gently. "My father left me a path. It's time I walked it."
