Chapter 10 - The Unmasking

The wharf exploded into a frantic firefight. Tracers cut through the thick ocean fog, bouncing off steel containers and sending showers of orange sparks into the dark water. Apex operators moved in tactical formation, systematically pushing back the Chairman's private security force.

Richard vaulted over a stack of wooden pallets, ignoring a graze from a stray bullet that tore through his sleeve. His target was already stepping onto the gangplank of the black yacht.

"Marcus! Cut off their engines!" Richard barked into his earpiece.

"On it!" Marcus replied from his sniper position. A heavy caliber armor-piercing round shattered the yacht's fuel manifold, causing a massive jet of blue flame to erupt from the stern, killing the propulsion system instantly.

The Chairman stumbled on the deck as the boat lurched violently. He turned around, pulling a customized chrome magnum from his holster, aiming directly at Richard, who was leaping onto the deck.

Richard threw himself to the left as a heavy bullet tore through the wooden deck railing where he had stood a second before. He closed the distance in a fraction of a second, grabbing the Chairman’s gun arm and driving his elbow into the man’s throat.

The Chairman choked, dropping the magnum, but quickly retaliated with a vicious spinning back-fist that struck Richard squarely in the jaw. Richard reeled back, tasting copper in his mouth, but countered with a brutal liver shot that doubled the masked man over.

Richard grabbed the golden mask by its upper edge and ripped it violently off the Chairman’s face.

The mask clattered onto the deck. The harsh halogen lights of the burning yacht illuminated the face beneath.

Richard froze, his eyes widening in complete shock and horror.

"No..." Richard gasped, his breath catching in his throat. "It can't be..."

Standing before him, wiping a streak of blood from his nose, was a man Richard had buried twenty-five years ago. A man whose name was carved on a marble headstone in the family cemetery.

"Hello, brother," the man said with a dark, mocking grin.

It was Victor Vance—Richard’s older brother, who was believed to have died in a plane crash off the coast of Maine two decades ago.

"Victor?" Richard whispered, his mind reeling. "You... you were dead! We identified the body! We found your watch!"

"A simple dental record swap and a sacrifice of a unhoused man dressed in my suit," Victor laughed, his voice no longer distorted by the mask. "Did you really think I would stay in Blackwood Bay to run a pathetic logistics company while our father’s real power lay in the shadow markets of Europe?"

"You orchestrated everything," Richard realized, his voice trembling with a terrifying blend of rage and grief. "The poisoning of Eleanor... the destruction of my life... you planned it all from the beginning!"

"Eleanor was smart, Richard," Victor said, his eyes cold as ice. "She found out I was alive. She realized I was using Vance Logistics to move unregistered nuclear components through the eastern seaboard. I couldn't let her blow my cover. So I had Julian slip the compound into her medicine."

"And Olivia?" Richard roared, grabbing Victor by his lapels and slamming him against the yacht’s cabin wall. "She's your niece! Your own blood!"

"She was a threat to the network!" Victor spat back. "Just like her mother! You were always the weak one, Richard! You had the skill, the tactical mind, but you had a heart! A heart makes you vulnerable!"

From the dock, Olivia rushed down the gangplank, a handgun held in her steady hands, flanked by Marcus and three Apex operators. She stopped dead in her tracks when she saw Victor's face.

"Uncle... Victor?" she stammered, her voice shaking. "You're... you're alive?"

Victor looked at Olivia, a cold smirk playing on his lips. "Look at you. You look just like Eleanor before she died. Pathetic. Fragile."

May you like

Olivia’s eyes hardened. She raised her weapon, aiming it directly between Victor’s eyes. "My mother died with dignity. You're going to die like a rat in a cage."
