Chapter 6 - The Race Against Time

"The mobile neuro-unit?" Julian shrieked from where he was cuffed on the floor. "That technology is illegal! It’s unproven! You’ll fry his brain!"

"He fried my wife's brain thirty years ago," Richard said without turning around. "I’d call this poetic justice."

Marcus gestured to two operators, who quickly brought in a heavy black metal case from one of the tactical vans. Opening it revealed a neural interface headset equipped with dozens of micro-needles and high-density bio-sensors.

Arthur’s smug smile vanished instantly. Real fear finally took hold of the old man’s eyes. "Richard! You can't do this! The ethical board... the international treaties!"

"I don't care about treaties, Arthur. I care about my daughter," Richard said, taking the headset from Marcus. "You have ten seconds to give me the decryption key, or I force the extraction. If it destroys your mind in the process, I won't lose a single night's sleep."

"You're a monster!" Arthur screamed, struggling wildly against the two guards holding him down. "You're worse than I am!"

"I'm a father," Richard corrected him. "Ten... nine... eight..."

"Wait!" Ethan suddenly yelled from the corner, his courage completely failing him. "Don't hurt him! I know where the backup drive is!"

Everyone turned to look at Ethan, who was sobbing uncontrollably on the carpet, clutching his broken hand.

"Ethan, shut up!" Julian roared, kicking his own son in the ribs. "If you tell him, we lose everything!"

"I don't care about the company, Dad! I don't want to go to prison for murder!" Ethan screamed back, turning to Richard with desperate, bloodshot eyes. "Ethan... please! I have the server passcodes! Arthur kept a physical flash drive in a safety deposit box at the Blackwood National Bank! The key is in his pocket watch!"

Richard didn't waste a second. He stepped up to Arthur, ripped the gold pocket watch from the old man's vest, and snapped it open. Hidden beneath the clockwork mechanism was a tiny, micro-engraved titanium drive.

"Is this it?" Richard barked at Dr. Aris.

Dr. Aris took the drive, plugging it into his medical tablet. A series of complex chemical structures immediately began rendering across the screen. "Yes! This is the full molecular structure of the toxin! I have the antitoxin compound formula! We can synthesize the neutralization serum right now in the mobile lab!"

"Do it!" Richard ordered.

Dr. Aris rushed out the front doors toward the medical vehicle parked in the driveway. Richard turned back to Arthur, Julian, and Ethan. The three men who had tried to destroy his life were now broken, cuffed, and awaiting their fate.

Outside, the flashing red and blue lights of dozens of police cruisers flickered against the wet trees as state troopers and federal agents finally breached the outer gates, having been granted clearance by Victoria Sterling.

"It's over, Julian," Victoria said, stepping forward as federal agents flooded into the foyer with drawn weapons. "Julian Vance, Ethan Vance, Arthur Vance... you are under arrest for conspiracy to commit murder, attempt to murder, corporate embezzlement, and treason."

As the police dragged the three screaming men away in handcuffs, Ethan looked back at Olivia one last time. "Olivia! Tell them I loved you! Tell them I was forced into it!"

Olivia turned her head away, refusing to grant him even a single glance.

Ten minutes later, inside the sterile environment of the mobile ICU van, Dr. Aris administered the synthesized antitoxin into Olivia's IV drip. Within moments, the grey pallor in her cheeks began to flush with warm color. Her rapid, painful breathing leveled out into a deep, steady rhythm.

Richard sat on the small metal stool beside her bed, holding her hand tightly. Tears finally welled up in the old man's eyes, dripping onto his worn denim jacket.

"You're going to be okay, baby," he whispered, kissing her forehead. "You're safe now."

"Dad..." Olivia murmured softly, opening her eyes. "Is it really over?"

Richard looked back at the grand Carrington Manor, where police officers were marking evidence and carrying out boxes of seized documents.

"No, sweetheart," Richard said, his expression hardening slightly as he remembered the names listed on the dark ledger. "This was just the local branch. Tomorrow... we go after the rest of the Syndicate."
