Chapter 13 - Shadows of the New Dawn
Olivia looked toward the wide glass patio doors with a slight frown. "Someone to see me? I didn't have any appointments scheduled before the board meeting."
"He's not a corporate client, Liv," Richard said, his tone turning surprisingly gentle. "He's someone who helped us from the shadows while we were fighting Victor."
A young man in his early thirties walked into the light of the sunlit patio. He wore a simple gray charcoal suit, carried a leather satchel, and walked with a slight, almost imperceptible limp. His face was sharp, intelligent, with dark green eyes that held a mix of deep sorrow and intense determination.
"Olivia," the young man said, stopping a respectful distance away and offering a polite nod. "It's an honor to finally meet you in person."
Olivia stared at him, feeling a strange sense of familiarity, though she was certain she had never met him before. "I'm sorry... do I know you?"
"My name is Lucas Vance," the man replied quietly.
Olivia’s body went rigid. Her eyes darted to her father, her instinct instantly putting her on guard. "Vance? Another one?"
"Easy, Liv," Richard said, placing a steadying hand on her shoulder. "Lucas is Julian’s estranged son from his first marriage. He left the family twelve years ago after refusing to participate in Julian's financial schemes."
"He's the anonymous source," Victoria added, stepping forward. "Lucas was the deep-throat informant who leaked the internal security codes of Pier 42 to my office three months ago. Without his encryption keys, Marcus's team would have never breached the harbor security perimeter."
Olivia looked at Lucas with a mix of surprise and confusion. "You helped us? Why? You risked your life to go against your own father and uncle."
Lucas let out a faint, somber sigh, looking around the bright foyer of Carrington Manor. "Because thirty years ago, when your mother was poisoned, my mother was the head nurse who cared for her in secret. My mother tried to report the abnormal chemical levels in Eleanor's blood to the state police... and three days later, she died in a mysterious car accident."
Olivia gasped, covering her mouth with her hand.
"I spent twelve years digging through my father's hidden files," Lucas continued, his eyes burning with quiet emotion. "I knew they killed my mother. I knew what they were doing to you. But I didn't have the tactical military power to take down Victor's syndicate on my own. When I learned your father had returned... I knew it was my only chance to bring them all to justice."
Richard stepped forward, offering his hand to Lucas. Lucas shook it firmly, a mutual respect passing between the two men who had fought the same enemy from different shadows.
"Lucas provided the final missing pieces of evidence that locked away Victor's European associates," Richard said to Olivia. "He’s an elite forensic accountant. He spent the last six months helping Victoria recover every penny stolen from the company's pension fund."
Olivia walked up to Lucas, extending her hand. "Thank you, Lucas. You risked everything for my mother's memory... and for my life."
Lucas smiled, a genuine, warm expression that softened his sharp features as he took her hand. "Your mother was a saint, Olivia. She tried to protect my mother when she realized the danger. I only wish I could have stopped Ethan before he hurt you."
"Ethan is where he belongs," Olivia said firmly. "And now... we rebuild."
"Which brings me to why I'm here today," Lucas said, pulling a thick folder from his satchel. "While auditing Victor's dark accounts in Zurich last night, I discovered something alarming. Victor wasn't the top of the pyramid."
The room went dead silent once again.
Richard’s eyes narrowed to tiny slits. "What did you say?"
May you like
Lucas opened the folder, displaying a set of red-stamped international shipping manifests. "Victor had a silent financial backer. Someone based in East Asia who provided seventy percent of the capital for the bio-nanite research. Someone known in the shadow network only as 'The Collector'."
