Chapter 5 - Shattered Glass and Broken Lies

The glass ceiling shattered in a spectacular shower of crystal shards as two Apex operators dropped down on high-speed cables. Before Arthur could pull the trigger or press the detonator, an operator slammed into him at full speed, tackling him over the mahogany balcony railing.
Arthur let out a terrified cry as he fell twelve feet, crashing heavily onto the dining room table below. The silver remote flew from his hand, skidding across the marble floor toward Ethan.
"The remote!" Ethan shrieked, scrambling on his hands and knees through the broken glass to grab it. "Give it to me! I'll blow us all up! I swear to God I'll do it!"
Ethan’s bleeding hands reached for the device, but before his fingers could brush the red button, Richard dropped his boot squarely onto Ethan’s hand. Bone cracked loudly under Richard’s heavy work boot.
Ethan screamed in agony, pulling his crushed hand back to his chest as Richard calmly kicked the remote across the floor to Marcus, who instantly disarmed the frequency lock.
"The threat is clear, sir," Marcus reported, securing the device. "Demolition team is entering the basement now to neutralize the charges."
Richard turned his focus to Arthur, who was groaning in the ruins of the dining table, his tuxedo torn and his arm bent at an unnatural angle. The old patriarch looked up, his arrogance completely shattered, replaced by the naked terror of a dying man.
"You... you can't kill me," Arthur wheezed, blood spurting from his lips. "I'm your blood, Richard... I'm your uncle..."
"Blood didn't stop you from killing Eleanor," Richard said, his tone icy and unyielding as he stood over the old man. "Blood didn't stop you from trying to murder my daughter. You aren't my blood, Arthur. You're a parasite."
Two Apex officers grabbed Arthur by his arms, dragging him to his feet despite his painful groans, while another pair cuffed Julian and Ethan.
Victoria Sterling stepped forward, holding her tablet. "The local police chief and federal marshals are waiting outside the gate, Richard. The jamming frequency has been lowered for official communications. They have the search warrants for all Vance corporate headquarters."
"Good," Richard said, turning back to where Olivia was sitting.
Dr. Aris, a private physician who had arrived with the tactical team, was already attending to Olivia, cleaning the cut on her forehead and wrapping a medical collar around her neck to stabilize her spinal alignment.
"How is she, Doctor?" Richard asked, his voice shaking with emotion.
"Multiple contusions, a mild concussion, and two cracked ribs," Dr. Aris reported, looking up grimly. "And I took a quick blood sample. Her liver enzyme levels are dangerously elevated. The toxin in her system is active, Mr. Vance. If we don't administer a broad-spectrum chelating agent and get her to an ICU within two hours, she will suffer permanent organ damage."
Richard felt a cold dagger pierce his heart. "Can you neutralize it?"
"We need the exact chemical structure of the synthetic compound Arthur used," Dr. Aris said, pointing at Arthur. "Without the antidote matrix, standard treatment might trigger an anaphylactic shock."
Richard turned like a thunderbolt toward Arthur, who was being held by the guards. "Where is the antidote formula, Arthur? Tell me now!"
Arthur spat a mouthful of blood onto the floor and let out a sinister, wheezing laugh. "Do you think I'm stupid, Richard? The formula is stored in a private server in Zurich. The only way to access it is through my biometric retina scan... and a thirty-digit encryption key that only I know."
Arthur leaned forward, his bloody face twisting into a triumphant grin. "You saved her from the glass, nephew... but she's going to die in two hours anyway unless you give me my freedom and hand over total control of Vance Global!"
Olivia looked at her father, her eyes wide with fear, as her breathing grew heavier and her skin turned an alarming shade of pale grey.
"Dad..." she whimpered, her hands shivering uncontrollably. "It hurts... my chest..."
Richard dropped to his knees beside her, holding her face between his rough hands. "Look at me, Liv. Stay with me. I promised your mother I would protect you, and I am not losing you tonight!"
He stood up, turning to Arthur with an expression so terrifying that even the hardened tactical guards took a step back.

"You think a password can stop me from saving my daughter?" Richard said in a voice that sounded like grinding steel. "Marcus... prepare the mobile neuro-interrogation unit."
