Chapter 17 - Fire on the High Seas

The explosion shattered the glass dome of the Grand Salon, sending a rain of glittering shards cascading down into the room. Alarms blared across *The Emperor's Grace* as emergency lights flashed bright red, casting terrifying shadows over the golden walls.

"Target acquired! Multiple fast-attack craft closing in from the north!" Marcus yelled, drawing his sidearm and pulling Olivia behind a heavy marble pillar.

Outside the panoramic windows, three dark military-grade gunboats emerged from the fog, their heavy automatic cannons firing explosive tracer rounds directly into the cruise ship's hull.

"Chen! Where is your security fleet?!" Richard shouted, ducking as a heavy caliber round tore through the granite table where Chen had been sitting seconds before.

"My outer patrol boats were compromised!" Chen coughed, supported by Mei-Ling as they took cover behind the central bar structure. "Beatrix must have bought off my maritime captains!"

"Lucas! Get on the ship's comms and signal the Apex fleet!" Richard ordered, kicking open a wooden cabinet and pulling out two heavy tactical rifles that Chen’s security team had left behind.

"I can't!" Lucas yelled, tapping frantically on his fried tablet. "Their gunboats are running heavy directional ECM jammers! All satellite and radio signals are dead!"

Olivia looked around the burning salon. Panic was not an option. She saw a tactical map of the vessel mounted on the wall near the service door.

"The engine room!" Olivia shouted to her father over the deafening roar of gunfire. "This ship is equipped with a high-power emergency fiber-optic transceiver in the lower engine deck! It runs on an underwater cable connection! The jammers can't block a physical wired line!"

Richard grinned through the smoke, slapping a fresh magazine into his rifle. "That's my girl! Marcus, clear a path to the service stairwell!"

"With pleasure, boss!" Marcus yelled, stepping out from behind the pillar and laying down suppressive fire against a team of Beatrix’s mercenaries who were rappelling down onto the outer deck from a stealth helicopter hovering overhead.

"Mei-Ling! Guide them to the lower decks!" Chen ordered, coughing heavily as smoke filled the room. "I will hold the salon with my remaining men!"

"No way, old man," Richard said, grabbing Chen by his collar and hauling him to his feet. "You know too much about Beatrix to die here. You're coming with us!"

They sprinted through the burning service corridors as the ship rocked violently under repeated missile strikes. Tracers tore through the walls, but Marcus and Richard moved with lethal efficiency, neutralizing every mercenary who crossed their path.

They reached the heavy steel blast doors of the lower engine room. Lucas quickly punched in the override codes provided by Mei-Ling, and the heavy doors hissed open.

Inside, the massive diesel engines roared like iron beasts. Olivia rushed to the optical communication console, powering up the high-speed underwater data link.

"Interface online!" Olivia called out, her fingers flying across the console. "I'm routing a direct distress signal to the US Coast Guard Seventh Fleet and the Apex Tactical Command Center!"

"Hurry, Olivia!" Lucas warned, watching the door security monitors. "Breaching charges are being placed on the upper deck stairs! We have less than sixty seconds!"

On the console screen, a progress bar began filling rapidly: *Transmitting Encrypted Coordinates... 40%... 70%... 100%! Transmission Complete!*

"Signal sent!" Olivia cheered.

At that exact moment, the heavy steel blast doors exploded inward with a deafening blast, throwing Richard and Marcus to the metal floor.

Through the billow of black smoke stepped a woman dressed in a sharp red leather coat, holding a pearl-handled revolver. Her cold blue eyes swept over the room, settling on Olivia and Richard.
