Chapter 4 - The Shadow on the Balcony

The gunshot sounded like a cannon in the enclosed marble space. A high-velocity round slammed into the floor right between Julian and Ethan, sending marble splinters flying into the air. Julian screamed, ducking for cover behind a heavy armchair.
"Sniper! Cover!" Marcus shouted, immediately throwing his body over Richard and Olivia as tactical guards raised their ballistic shields.
Up on the second-floor mezzanine, a figure dressed in a dark tailored tuxedo stepped out from behind the velvet curtains. In his hand was a sleek suppressed pistol. The faint moonlight filtering through the high skylight caught the silver hair and distinguished features of Arthur Vance—Richard and Julian’s uncle, the eighty-year-old patriarch of the Carrington-Vance empire.
"You always were too sentimental, Richard," Arthur’s voice echoed down from the balcony, steady and completely devoid of fear. "You ran away to play the noble martyr, leaving the dirty work of building wealth to men who actually understood power."
Richard pushed Marcus’s shield aside and stood tall, looking up at his uncle. "Arthur. I should have known you were the snake behind the curtain."
"Snake?" Arthur chuckled, a cold, raspy sound. "I am the founder of this empire! Your father was weak, Richard. Eleanor was weak. And this girl..." Arthur pointed his gun toward Olivia. "...this girl was a liability the moment she inherited forty percent of the voting stock. A woman who spends her weekends volunteering at free clinics has no business controlling deep-sea ports and military freight contracts."
"You poisoned my mother!" Olivia screamed from behind the shield, her voice shaking with rage. "You poisoned me!"
"It was business, my dear," Arthur said smoothly, adjusting the cuffs of his tuxedo. "Nothing personal. You were sick, so you were removed from the equation. It's the law of nature. The weak feed the strong."
"You're not leaving this building, Arthur," Richard said, stepping forward out of the shield circle. "Apex has locked down every square inch of this valley."
Arthur smiled, pulling a small silver remote from his pocket. "Do you really think I didn't prepare for a contingency, nephew? I've known about your little private army for years. That's why I had my own men install something special beneath the foundation of this estate three days ago."
Richard’s eyes widened. "C4."
"Five hundred pounds of industrial demolition explosive," Arthur corrected him. "Connected to a dead-man's switch on this remote. If my heart rate spikes above one-forty, or if I press this red button, the entire Carrington Estate becomes a mass grave. You, your daughter, your private soldiers, and all these useless socialite parasites will burn together."
Panicked screams erupted among the trapped guests. Women dropped to their knees, weeping, while men tried frantically to smash the heavy reinforced windows with brass lamps, to no avail.
"What do you want, Arthur?" Richard asked, keeping his hands visible and taking a slow, measured step toward the central staircase.
"I want the master key to the Geneva accounts," Arthur demanded, his eyes glinting with manic greed. "The dark ledger you stole when you left thirty years ago. Give me the access codes, and I take my helicopter off the roof and leave you with your broken daughter. Refuse, and we all die right here."
Olivia clutched Richard’s belt from behind. "Dad... don't give it to him. That ledger contains the names of every corrupt official in the state. If he gets it, he'll be untouchable."
Richard looked back at his daughter, seeing the absolute fear in her eyes, but also a burning flicker of defiance that reminded him so much of her mother. He turned back to Arthur.
"The ledger is in my head, Arthur," Richard lied, taking another step up the marble stairs. "No physical drive exists. You want the codes? You have to let Olivia walk out that front door first."
"No deals!" Arthur snapped, raising the gun directly at Richard’s forehead. "You have five seconds to start reciting the alphanumeric key, or I press the button!"
"Five..." Arthur counted.
Richard didn't flinch. He slowly raised his left hand, turning his wrist slightly toward Marcus.
"Four..."
Olivia squeezed her eyes shut, holding her breath.
"Three..."

Suddenly, a bright, blinding flash erupted from the ceiling skylight above Arthur's head as a rappelling tactical team smashed through the heavy glass.
