Chapter 3 - The Poisoned Legacy

The word 'poison' hung in the heavy, airless darkness of Carrington Manor like a death sentence. Richard’s entire body went rigid. The memory of his late wife, Eleanor, dying thirty years ago of a mysterious neurological decay—a death that had driven him into self-imposed exile—flashed before his eyes in violent detail.
"What did you say?" Richard’s voice was barely a whisper, but it carried a lethal edge that made even Marcus take a cautious step back.
Olivia pulled a small glass vial wrapped in a plastic bag from her clutch purse, which had been hidden beneath the couch cushions. "I took a sample of the herbal supplement Ethan insisted I take every morning. I had a friend at the university lab analyze it yesterday. It's an arsenic derivative mixed with a synthetic neurotoxin. It causes gradual organ failure... simulating an autoimmune disease."
"You sick bastards," Richard growled, his eyes locking onto Julian Vance.
Julian backed up into his security guards, waving his hands frantically. "This is absurd! She's hysterical! She suffered a head injury! Ethan, tell him!"
Ethan, however, was staring at the floor, his face pale as death. His silence was an overwhelming confession.
"Thirty years ago," Richard said, taking a step toward Julian, "my wife died of the exact same symptoms. The doctors called it early-onset ALS. I blamed myself for not being home enough. I blamed the hard work. But it was you, wasn't it, Julian? You wanted control of Vance Global, and Eleanor held forty percent of the voting shares."
"You can't prove anything!" Julian shouted, his composure completely shattering. "Eleanor died of natural causes! And even if she didn't, the statute of limitations has run out! You have no standing here, Richard! You gave up your rights!"
"The statute of limitations on murder never runs out in this state, Julian," a smooth, calm voice echoed from the shadowed hallway near the kitchen.
A woman in a sharp dark business suit walked out into the flashlight beams. She held a leather briefcase in one hand and a glowing tablet in the other. It was Victoria Sterling, Blackwood Bay's most formidable corporate prosecutor—and Richard’s personal legal counsel.
"Victoria?" Julian gasped. "What are you doing here?"
"I'm here to serve you with an asset freezing order issued forty-five minutes ago by the Federal District Court," Victoria said, holding up a certified document. "Every bank account, property, and shipping vessel owned by Vance Global Logistics has been seized under the RICO Act, pending an investigation into systemic poisonings, murder, and high-level fraud."
Ethan let out a frantic cry and suddenly lunged toward the dark hallway leading to the service exit. "Get out of my way!"
"Stop him!" Julian yelled.
Ethan didn't get five feet. Marcus stepped into his path like a brick wall, catching Ethan by the throat and driving him back down onto his knees with a brutal knee to the ribs. Ethan gasped for air, clutching his side as he fell beside his father.
"Nobody leaves," Richard said, his tone devoid of any remaining humanity. "Not until I get the full truth. Who else was involved, Julian? Who gave you the chemical compound?"
Julian looked around frantically. The elite guests who had been sipping his champagne minutes ago were now pulling away, anxious to disassociate themselves from a sinking ship. The tactical guards stood immovable at every exit.
"It wasn't just us!" Julian blurted out, tears of panic finally spilling down his cheeks. "We didn't manufacture it! We were supplied by the Board of Governors! The Syndicate!"
Richard’s eyes narrowed. "The Syndicate? My father's old advisory council?"
"They never wanted Eleanor to have the shares!" Julian confessed, weeping hysterically now. "They said a woman shouldn't control the shipping routes to Asia! They gave me the poison, Richard! They told me if I didn't use it on Eleanor, they would eliminate my branch of the family too! And six months ago, when Olivia started asking questions about her mother's trust fund, they ordered Ethan to do the same thing to her!"
Olivia covered her face, sobbing softly. Richard reached down, gently touching her hair, his heart breaking for the pain his daughter had endured while trying to honor her mother's memory.
"Who heads the Syndicate now, Julian?" Richard asked, his voice low and dangerous. "Who gave the direct order to kill my daughter?"
Julian hesitated, looking toward the curtained balcony on the second floor. A shadow seemed to move behind the heavy velvet drapes.
"He's... he's here tonight," Julian whispered, pointing a trembling finger upward. "He came to watch Ethan finalize the transfer of Olivia's remaining shares."

Richard looked up at the second-floor balcony just as a gunshot shattered the stillness of the room.
