Chapter 9 - The Ambush at Pier 42

Midnight arrived under a heavy fog that rolled off the dark waters of Blackwood Harbor. Pier 42 was an abandoned industrial shipping facility, its rusted cranes looming over the empty docks like prehistoric monsters. The gentle sound of waves lapping against wooden pylons was shattered by the distant hum of a powerful boat engine.

Richard stood alone at the edge of the pier, dressed in his black tactical sweater, the silver locket dangling from his right fingers. The ocean breeze blew his silver hair across his eyes, but his stance was immovable.

From the fog, a sleek black stealth yacht glided silently toward the pier. Its engines cut off as it drifted alongside the dock, and six armed men dressed in dark mercenary gear stepped onto the wooden planks, weapons raised.

Behind them walked a tall, imposing man wearing a tailored charcoal suit and a golden mask covering the upper half of his face. The Chairman.

"You're punctual, Richard," the Chairman said, his voice echoing through the metallic vocal filter of his mask. "Where is the girl?"

"She's in a safe house ten miles away," Richard lied, keeping his tone steady. "You get the locket after I verify that the satellite frequency targeting her has been permanently disabled."

The Chairman chuckled, taking a slow step forward. "You are in no position to negotiate, Lord Vane. Give me the locket, or I issue the termination command right now."

Richard held up the locket, letting it catch the dim yellow light of the dock lamps. "The encryption on this drive is protected by a proximity biometric lock keyed to my DNA. If I die, or if my heart stops, the memory chip self-destructs instantly. You'll get nothing."

The Chairman paused, his gloved hand hovering near a control tablet strapped to his wrist. "You were always a clever bastard, Richard. Fine. Place the locket on the crate in front of you and step back three paces."

Richard complied, placing the silver heart onto a wooden cargo crate and stepping back slowly.

The Chairman gestured to his lead technician, who stepped forward with a heavy military diagnostic scanner. The technician picked up the locket, aligning the scanner's laser eye with the UV-engraved micro-codes.

"Scanning drive geometry," the technician announced, his voice tense. "Decrypting security layer 1... layer 2... progress at forty percent..."

High up in the structural steel of Crane 4, fifty yards away, Olivia crouched in the shadows, holding a high-powered tactical laptop connected to a directional antenna array. Marcus stood right beside her, providing sniper cover with a suppressed thermal rifle.

"The Trojan is uploading," Olivia whispered into her headset, her fingers flying across the keyboard. "Data injection at sixty percent... seventy percent..."

"Hurry, kid," Marcus murmured, his scope pinned directly on the Chairman’s head. "Their technician looks like he's picking up an anomaly."

"Warning! Anomaly detected in data stream!" the technician suddenly yelled, pulling back from the crate. "It's a payload attack! They're trying to overwrite our orbital command module!"

"Kill her!" the Chairman screamed, slamming his hand down onto his wrist tablet to initiate the remote signal.

"Now, Olivia!" Richard shouted.

Olivia slammed the enter key on her laptop. "Payload executed!"

A high-frequency pulse burst from the directional antenna on Crane 4, intercepting the signal from the Chairman's tablet micro-seconds before it reached the satellite relay. On the diagnostic screen attached to Olivia’s neck monitor, a green light flashed, followed by a soft chime: *Target Node Deactivated.*

"Signal blocked!" Olivia cheered into the comms. "Dad, the node is dead! Go!"

Before the Chairman could react, Richard drew a concealed Glock from his waistband and fired three rapid shots into the lead technician's chest.

"Ambush!" the Chairman roared, ducking behind a metal shipping container as gunfire erupted across Pier 42.

Marcus began picking off the Chairman's mercenaries from his high perch on the crane, while dark tactical vehicles driven by Apex operators crashed through the pier's wooden gates, blinding the enemy with high-powered searchlights.

Richard charged through the gunfire, his eyes locked onto the fleeing Chairman, who was sprinting back toward the stealth yacht. "You're not escaping tonight!"
