Chapter 2 - The Shadows of the Past

The darkness inside Carrington Manor was total, save for the flashing red emergency beacons on the armored vehicles outside. Outside the floor-to-ceiling windows, rain lashed against the glass as heavy boots stomped across the perimeter. Tactical flashlights cut through the dark foyer, illuminating the terrified faces of Blackwood Bay's elite.

"What is the meaning of this?!" shouted Julian Vance, Ethan’s father and the chief executive of Vance Global Logistics. Julian pushed his way through the crowd, his silver hair immaculate despite the chaos. "Security! Who authorized these men? Call the police!"

A beam of bright white LED light pinned Julian right in the chest. A towering figure stepped out of the shadows behind Richard. It was Marcus, a rugged veteran with a scar running from his ear to his jaw, wearing full tactical gear with no insignia.

"The police won't be answering your calls tonight, Mr. Vance," Marcus said, his voice flat and authoritative. "Cellular towers within a five-mile radius have been jammed. You are in a secure perimeter controlled by Apex Tactical."

Julian blinked in disbelief, looking from Marcus to Richard, who was gently lowering Olivia onto a plush leather sofa near the wall. "Apex Tactical? That's a top-tier private military contractor! They only answer to the board of the Vance-Carrington Syndicate! Who paid you?"

Richard turned around slowly, wiping a spot of rain from his forehead. "Nobody paid him, Julian. He works for me. He always has."

Julian laughed, a harsh, dismissive sound. "You? Richard, you're a disgraced mechanic from the dockyards! You left this family thirty years ago with nothing but the clothes on your back! You gave up your inheritance!"

"I didn't give up anything," Richard replied calmly. He reached into his denim jacket and pulled out a worn leather notebook, tossing it onto the marble table in front of Julian. "I stepped aside so my brother could manage the public assets while I built the shadow infrastructure. Every shipping lane, every offshore account, every contract Apex Tactical holds was signed by my hand under the pseudonym 'Vane'. Did you really think your little logistics firm was surviving on smart investments?"

Olivia groaned on the sofa, clutching her ribs. Richard immediately knelt beside her, his harsh demeanour melting away into pure parental tenderness. "Stay still, sweetheart. Dr. Aris is on his way down."

"Dad..." Olivia coughed, her eyes wide with confusion and pain. "What is he talking about? You told me you worked on diesel engines in Seattle... You told me mom died in a factory accident..."

Richard took her bruised hand, squeezing it softly. "I had to lie to you, Liv. If Ethan's family knew who you really were—if they knew you were the sole heir to eighty percent of Vance Global—they would have used you as leverage. I wanted you to have a normal life. I wanted you to marry for love, not power."

"Love?" Ethan’s rasping voice broke through the silence. Supported by two trembling security guards, Ethan dragged himself up from the pile of shattered glass. His white shirt was soaked in dark blood from multiple cuts on his back, but his eyes burned with pure malice. "She didn't marry me for love! She married me because she thought I was her ticket into the upper crest! And look at her! She’s weak! Just like you!"

Richard stood up without a word. He walked up to Ethan until their faces were inches apart. Ethan flinched, but tried to hold his ground.

"You hit her," Richard said quietly.

"She disobeyed me!" Ethan snarled, his arrogance blinding him to the danger he was in. "She found files she wasn't supposed to see in my study. She was going to go to the District Attorney! I did what any husband in my position would do to protect our family business!"

"Your family business?" Richard smiled, a terrifying, emotionless expression. "Marcus, bring up file 7-B on the portable projector."

Marcus clicked a device on his wrist. A compact holographic projector flickered to life, beaming a bright blue interface onto the high white wall of the foyer. Documents, wire transfers, and bank statements began scrolling at high speed.

The crowd gathered around, whispers spreading like wildfire.

"That's... that's the offshore accounts of Vance Logistics," Julian stammered, his face losing all color. "How did you get those?"

"Ethan didn't just hit my daughter because she found out about his mistress or his gambling debts," Richard announced, turning to the crowd of influential board members and politicians standing in the dark. "He hit her because Olivia discovered that Ethan and Julian have been laundering money for the Vane Syndicate while systematically embezzling fifty million dollars from the public pension fund."

Ethan’s eyes widened in horror. "That's a lie! She's lying! She forged those documents!"

"I didn't forge anything, Ethan," Olivia spoke up, her voice trembling but filled with newfound strength as she leaned against her father's shoulder. "I found the digital keys hidden in your safe... along with the poison reports."

The room went dead silent.

"Poison reports?" Richard turned his gaze slowly toward his daughter, his heart pounding with a sudden, dreadful suspicion. "What poison reports, Olivia?"

May you like

Olivia looked directly at Julian Vance, her eyes burning with tears of betrayal. "The toxic chemical compound they've been slipping into my mother's medicine thirty years ago... and the exact same compound they've been putting in my tea for the last six months."
