Chapter 11 - The Second Keycard

The word hung in the damp night air like a heavy curtain falling over a stage. My mother.
My mother, Eleanor Vance, had been living in a private specialized care facility in Switzerland for the past eight years, suffering from late-stage Alzheimer's disease—or so I had been told. I had been paying over twelve thousand dollars a month for her medical care, sending wire transfers regularly to a private clinic in Zurich.
"My mother?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper. "What are you talking about, Sarah? My mother is in a memory care home in Zurich. She doesn't even recognize her own name!"
Sarah looked up at me, her face pale and tormented under the flashing blue lights of the police cruisers. "Mark... Eleanor doesn't have Alzheimer's. She never did."
"Stop lying!" I snapped, the overwhelming exhaustion of the night finally making my emotional control crumble. "I saw her medical reports! I talked to her primary physician every month!"
"The physician was on Julian's payroll," Sarah revealed, her voice shaking violently as federal agents guided us into the back of a secure transport vehicle to escape the rain. "Eight years ago, before your father died, Eleanor discovered that your father and Julian were using the family company to run unsanctioned genetic trials on military recruits. When she threatened to go to the Department of Justice, Julian had her forcibly committed to that facility under a false diagnosis to silence her."
My stomach turned into a cold knot. "And the Swiss bank account?"
"It was set up in Eleanor's name by your father before he died," Sarah explained, staring down at her tightly clasped hands. "It holds the original, unmodified genetic code for the Apex project—the true formula that your father created before Julian corrupted it for commercial weaponization. Your father left the key to that account to me... in trust for Tommy."
"In trust for Tommy?" I asked, pieces of the puzzle beginning to lock into place with frightening speed. "Why Tommy?"
"Because your father knew Julian would come back," Sarah whispered. "Your father knew that Julian was reckless and sociopathic. He wanted to make sure that if Julian ever tried to steal the company back, the true patent and the legal proof of Julian's crimes would belong to your son, making Tommy the rightful heir to the entire Vance estate."
"So Julian wasn't just after Tommy's blood samples," I said, realization dawning on me with terrifying clarity. "He wanted Tommy's legal status as the heir to unlock the Swiss trust."
"Yes," Sarah nodded, tears falling continuously. "When Julian found me two years ago, he showed me proof that your mother was still alive and being held hostage in that facility in Zurich. He told me that if I didn't give him Tommy's blood samples and help him bypass the trust security, he would kill Eleanor in Switzerland and execute you here in the States."
I sat back in the dark interior of the transport vehicle, the sound of the rain drumming against the roof. The sheer scale of the deception was breathtaking. My entire family history was a battlefield of corporate greed, hostage-taking, and shadow wars.
Detective Brody opened the door of the transport vehicle, looking in at us with a serious expression.
"Mark," Brody said softly. "I just got a call from Saint Jude's Hospital. The pediatric surgeons have finished operating on Lily's leg. The operation was a complete success. And Tommy's fever has officially dropped back to ninety-nine degrees. The doctors say both kids are completely out of danger."
A wave of overwhelming relief washed over me, so intense that my eyes filled with tears. I wiped my face with the sleeve of my jacket and took a deep, clear breath for the first time in hours.
"Take me to the hospital, Brody," I said firmly. "I need to see my children."
"What about Sarah?" Brody asked quietly, glancing at my wife.

I looked at Sarah. She was looking at me with eyes full of repentance, waiting for my judgment.
"She comes with us under police guard," I said coldly. "We still have a mother to save in Switzerland.
