Chapter 7 - The Restraining Order

The torrential rain showed no sign of stopping as I drove my SUV toward Pier 42 at the edge of the city's dark industrial shipping district. The giant rusted cranes stood against the night sky like towering skeletons, surrounded by stacks of colorful shipping containers. Water pooled in massive puddles on the cracked asphalt, reflecting the amber lights of distant cargo ships.
My heart was hammering against my ribs, but my mind was laser-focused. On the passenger seat beside me rested the thermal pouch containing Tommy's blood samples, along with the encrypted flash drive containing the Trojan payload.
I pulled into an open asphalt lot near an abandoned warehouse. Standing in the middle of the rain-slicked pavement was a silver sedan with tinted windows. As soon as I stopped my vehicle and turned off the engine, two tall men clad in dark raincoats and tactical gear stepped out of the sedan, their hands resting noticeably inside their jackets on concealed holsters.
I stepped out of my SUV, holding my hands high above my head, letting the cold rain soak through my business suit.
"Mark Vance," one of the men barked, his voice thick with a foreign accent. "Where is the drive?"
"Where is my wife?" I replied, standing my ground as water streamed down my face. "Julian promised she would be here."
The driver's door of the silver sedan opened, and Sarah was pushed out onto the pavement. Her wrists were still bound, her eyes wide with terror, her hair plastered against her face by the pouring rain. When she saw me, tears mingled with the rain on her cheeks.
"Mark..." she wept, collapsing onto her knees in a puddle. "I'm so sorry... I'm so sorry! I tried to protect them!"
"Quiet!" the guard shouted, grabbing her shoulder roughly and yanking her back up.
"Take your hands off her," I said in a dead, lethal tone, stepping forward.
The two guards immediately drew silenced pistols and pointed them at my chest. "Give us the drive, Vance. Now."
I reached into my inner jacket pocket slowly and pulled out the metal flash drive, holding it between my fingers. "The master key is on this drive. But before you touch it, tell Julian to check his terminal."
The guard holding Sarah scowled, pulling out a satellite tablet from his coat. He tapped the screen and sent a signal. A few seconds later, his tablet chimed, displaying a green confirmation message.
"He says the signal is verified," the guard muttered, lowering his weapon slightly. "Give it here."
"Not until Sarah walks across to my car," I demanded.
The lead guard grunted, shoving Sarah forward. She stumbled across the wet pavement, practically falling into my arms. I held her with one arm, feeling her body shaking uncontrollably, while I tossed the flash drive across the space into the guard's hands.
The guard caught it, turned around, and immediately climbed into the silver sedan with his partner. The car roared to life, its tires screeching against the wet asphalt as it sped out of the pier lot into the darkness.
"Mark... Tommy... Lily..." Sarah sobbed, clinging to my wet coat with incredible force. "Are they alive? Are they okay?"
"They're at Saint Jude's," I said coldly, stepping back from her grip and looking down at her with eyes stripped of all tenderness. "Lily is in surgery for a compound fracture that you let rot under dirty plaster. Tommy is in the ICU fighting a viral fever that you injected into his blood."
Sarah flinched as if I had struck her across the face. She fell back against the side of my SUV, her head buried in her hands, wracked with violent sobs.
"You don't understand..." she choked out through her tears. "He threatened to murder you two years ago! He showed me photos of a sniper scoped on your office window! He said if I didn't administer the cellular trials to Tommy, he would execute you and take both kids to an overseas facility where they would never see the sun again!"
"And you decided to keep quiet?!" I yelled over the sound of the falling rain. "You decided to lie to me every single day for two years?! You let our daughter suffer on the floor crawling with a broken leg!"
"I didn't break her leg!" Sarah screamed back, looking up with raw desperation. "Julian's enforcer pushed the bookcase when he came to collect the monthly bio-metrics! I tried to take her to the hospital, but Julian put men outside our driveway! They locked us in! They said if I stepped foot in an ER, they would trigger Tommy's viral payload and kill him within hours!"
Before I could reply, my phone vibrated violently. It was Detective Brody.
"Mark!" Brody shouted over the speaker. "The FBI counter-terrorism squad just cleared the hospital roof! It was a decoy device—a dummy transmitter meant to keep us occupied!"
"What about Tommy and Lily?!" I yelled into the phone.
"They're secure!" Brody said. "But Mark, the FBI just intercepted an encrypted military signal originating from an abandoned chemical plant five miles south of your position. The Trojan virus you put on that flash drive just pinged! Julian is at the plant!"

I looked at Sarah, whose eyes filled with terror.
"Get in the car, Sarah," I commanded in a low voice. "We're ending this tonight.
