Chapter 8 - The Hidden Flash Drive

The black asphalt rolled beneath the tires of my SUV as I drove toward the abandoned industrial district on the southern edge of the city. Sarah sat in the passenger seat, staring out into the dark night, her breathing uneven. The tension inside the vehicle was thick enough to cut with a knife.
"Mark..." Sarah whispered softly, her hands resting tightly in her lap. "You have to believe me. Everything I did... I did it because I thought it was the only way to keep you all alive. Julian is a monster. He doesn't think like a normal human being."
"If you had trusted me, Sarah," I said without taking my eyes off the slick road, "we could have gone to the authorities two years ago. We could have put the kids under federal protection. Instead, you built a wall of lies, played doctor with our son's life, and let Lily suffer in agony on the floor."
"I was terrified!" she cried, turning to face me with raw tears streaming down her face. "You don't know what he did to my family before we met! My father didn't die of a heart attack, Mark! Julian poisoned him six years ago to cover up the Apex BioTech financial fraud! When Julian showed up at our house two years ago with a file full of medical records and photos of you, I knew he meant every word."
I gripped the steering wheel harder. The piece of the puzzle finally clicked. Sarah's father had been the chief financial officer at Apex BioTech before his sudden death six years ago. She hadn't just been a target of blackmail; she was tied to the dark history of the company from the very beginning.
"Why Tommy?" I asked, my voice barely audible over the hum of the engine. "Why did he target our son?"
Sarah swallowed hard, wiping her cheeks with the back of her trembling hand. "Because of your bloodline, Mark. Your father wasn't an only child... he was a survivor of an elite military genetic study in the 1970s. You and Julian carried the recessive genetic traits, but neither of you had the active expression. When Tommy was born, Julian ran a secret blood test during his routine infant screening. Tommy was born with the active Apex marker—the exact cellular code required to stabilize their gene-therapy patents."
I felt a cold horror settle deep in my stomach. The entire existence of my family had been manipulated from the start.
My phone screen illuminated on the dashboard display—an encrypted call from Detective Brody. I tapped the hands-free button.
"Mark, where are you?" Brody's urgent voice echoed through the car speakers. "FBI Tactical Units are encircling the old Apex Chemical Plant on Route 9. We have three sniper teams taking positions on the surrounding perimeters."
"We're three minutes away," I replied. "Brody, did you get the full bio-metric telemetry from the basement server?"
"Yes," Brody confirmed. "The FBI bio-weapons division analyzed the blood samples you left in the basement. They identified the viral vector Julian was using on Tommy. The hospital medical team at Saint Jude's has already begun synthesizing the neutralizing agent based on those samples! Tommy's fever is dropping, Mark! He's going to make it!"
A heavy sigh of overwhelming relief escaped my lungs. Tears welled in my eyes as I pressed my hand against my face for a brief second. My boy was going to live.
"Thank God," Sarah wept quietly beside me, sinking into her seat. "Thank God..."
"Now we finish Julian," I said, my voice hardening like iron. "Brody, Julian thinks he successfully downloaded my master encryption key. He's currently running the extraction protocol at the plant to access the sixty million dollars in frozen funds. But in ninety seconds, the Trojan virus will lock down his system and purge his local data banks."
"Good," Brody said grimly. "When his system locks down, he'll realize he's been played and try to escape through the subterranean access tunnels underneath the plant. My squad is setting up a roadblock at the south exit tunnel. Don't engage him yourself, Mark. Let the tactical teams handle him."
I pulled the SUV off the main highway onto a gravel road leading toward the massive looming silhouette of the abandoned Apex Chemical Plant. Tall chain-link fences topped with razor wire surrounded the decaying industrial complex. Rain poured down over the rusted steel structures and broken concrete silos.
I parked the vehicle behind a line of dense trees three hundred yards from the main entrance, keeping our lights off.
"Stay in the car, Sarah," I ordered, unbuckling my seatbelt.
May you like
"Mark, no! It's too dangerous!" she pleaded, reaching for my arm.
I looked at her, my eyes cold and unflinching. "You lied to me for two years to keep me out of the fight. Now sit here and watch how a father protects his family.
