Chapter 15 - The Unseen Puppeteer

The threat from Apex Global Holdings made it crystal clear that arresting Julian was only the first battle in a much larger, dirtier war. Julian wasn't a lone wolf rogue actor; he was merely the tipped spear of a massive, cold-blooded corporate cartel that viewed human life—including my baby son's life—as nothing more than patented intellectual property.

"They're bluffing," Brody muttered angrily after the lawyers left the hallway. "No federal judge in their right mind would order a child to be placed in corporate custody for 'gene harvesting'!"

"You don't know how deep their money goes, Brody," I said, my eyes burning with lethal determination as I pulled out my laptop. "Apex Global spent twenty years buying off regulatory boards, judges, and politicians. If they filed an emergency injunction, they already have a corrupt judge sitting in their pocket ready to sign the order."

"Then what do we do?" Brody asked. "We can't just go to trial unprepared!"

"We don't go to trial unprepared," I said, opening my encrypted network link to my mother's transport detail. "My mother is landing at the military airfield in forty-five minutes. She holds the micro-hard drive containing the complete financial ledgers of Apex Global—including the off-book slush funds used to bribe state officials and judges."

I dialed Vance Sterling on a secure line. "Sterling, I need you and your top security team at the regional airport. My mother is arriving from Geneva. Protect her with your life."

"Consider it done, Mark," Sterling replied. "We'll escort her straight to the federal courthouse in an armored transport."

For the rest of the day and through the long night, I didn't sleep a single second. I sat at my laptop inside the hospital room, building an ironclad legal defense alongside two elite civil rights attorneys provided by the Department of Justice. We analyzed every single line of genetic patent law, corporate jurisdiction statutes, and human rights charters.

By 8:00 AM the following morning, my mother arrived at the federal courthouse under heavy armed escort. I left Lily and Tommy under the protective care of Detective Brody and four armed federal marshals at Saint Jude's Hospital, then drove to the downtown Federal Courthouse for the most important legal fight of my life.

The main courtroom on the fifth floor was packed with corporate attorneys, media reporters, and federal observers. Sitting at the plaintiff table was Arthur Sterling-Cross, flanked by six senior corporate attorneys from Apex Global Holdings.

At 9:00 AM sharp, Judge Richard Vance-Galloway—a stern, grey-haired magistrate with a reputation for corporate-friendly rulings—took the bench and slammed his gavel down.

"Court is in session," Judge Galloway announced coldly. "We are here for Case 409-B: Apex Global Holdings versus Mark Vance, regarding emergency parental restraint and biological asset preservation."

Arthur Sterling-Cross immediately stood up, adjusting his immaculate suit jacket. "Your Honor, the emergency petition before you is simple. The defendant's son, Thomas Vance, carries an engineered cellular sequence that represents three hundred million dollars of proprietary research owned by my client. We request an immediate emergency protective order placing the child in a specialized corporate medical facility to prevent asset degradation."

"That is an absolute outrage!" my lead attorney, Elena Rodriguez, shouted, rising to her feet. "Thomas Vance is an eighteen-month-old human child! You cannot patent human DNA, nor can a corporation claim custody over a minor!"

Judge Galloway leaned forward, his face expressionless. "Attorney Rodriguez, Apex Global holds three valid federal patents on the synthetically created Apex-9 viral vector. If the child's body contains that sequence, corporate law provides precedents for biological containment."

It was clear from the judge's tone that he was already leaning toward signing the order. The corruption was blatantly obvious.

Suddenly, the heavy double doors at the back of the courtroom swung open with a loud thud.

Walking down the central aisle, supported by Vance Sterling on one side and a federal agent on the other, was my mother, Eleanor Vance. She held a black leather folder tightly against her chest, her chin held high, her presence radiating undeniable authority.

"Your Honor!" my mother's clear voice echoed through the vast courtroom, cutting through the silence like a sword. "Before you sign that illegal order, you might want to look at Page 42 of the financial ledger I hold in my hand—the page listing the four million dollar offshore wire transfer made to your private account in the Cayman Islands last month!
