Chapter 9 - The Voice on the Line

I slipped out into the freezing rain, keeping low as I moved swiftly through the shadows of the rusted storage tanks surrounding the perimeter of the plant. In the distance, I could see the subtle red laser pings from the FBI sniper teams positioned on the upper catwalks of the outer buildings.

The main entrance to the chemical facility was a massive rusted sliding door, partially jammed open. I carefully slipped inside, my eyes adjusting to the dark, cavernous interior. The air inside smelled of stale rust, chemical ozone, and damp concrete. High above on the second-story mezzanine, a single lit room projected halogen light through reinforced glass windows—the temporary command center where Julian was operating.

I moved quietly up the metal emergency staircase, every step precise. Through the thick glass of the mezzanine office, I saw Julian Vance.

He looked remarkably like me—same tall frame, same sharp jawline—but his eyes were sunken, hollowed by years of paranoia and illicit living. He was wearing a dark tailored coat, standing frantically before an array of glowing laptop monitors. Beside him stood his two armed guards, their submachine guns slung across their shoulders.

"What do you mean the system is locked?!" Julian's furious voice echoed through the metal walls of the complex. "Override it! Type the bypass code!"

"It's not working, boss!" one of the technicians seated at the terminal yelled in panic. "The master key was a trojan! It's erasing our local drives! The data is being corrupted from the inside out!"

"That pathetic fool!" Julian roared, slamming his fist down onto the desk, smashing a glass water tumbler to pieces. "Mark played us! Get the secondary hard drives! Pack the mobile lab! We're leaving through the tunnel now!"

"You're not going anywhere, Julian," I said, kicking open the heavy steel door of the office and stepping inside.

The two guards instantly whipped around, raising their weapons directly at my chest. Julian froze, turning slowly to face me. A sinister, psychotic smile slowly spread across his face as he looked at me.

"Well, well," Julian sneered, straightening his coat. "The prodigal brother arrives. I must admit, Mark, I underestimated you. You were always such a timid, rule-following little nerd. I didn't think you had the backbone to execute a Trojan payload."

"The game is over, Julian," I said calmly, stepping deeper into the room despite the gun barrels pointed at my head. "The hospital roof decoy was disarmed. Tommy is in the ICU receiving the neutralizing agent right now. His fever is broken. The FBI has this entire plant surrounded, and three sniper teams are locked onto your head through that window behind you."

Julian's smile faltered for a fraction of a second, his eyes darting toward the rain-splattered windows. But he quickly regained his composure, letting out a dark chuckle.

"You think you've won?" Julian sneered, pulling a small black detonator device from his coat pocket. "You really think I didn't prepare a backup plan for a raid? This building is rigged with four industrial thermite charges attached to the support pillars. If I press this button, this entire structure collapses in thirty seconds, burying us all under five hundred tons of burning steel."

"Put the detonator down, Julian," I said, taking a deliberate step forward. "You don't want to die here. You love your own life too much."

"Try me, brother!" Julian screamed, his thumb hovering over the red switch. "I spent six years in the shadows building Apex BioTech back from the ashes! I will not spend the rest of my life rotting in a federal prison while you go back to your cozy little suburban house with your perfect little family!"

"You're right about one thing," I said, my voice dropping to an icy whisper. "I am going back to my family. But you're not going anywhere."

At that exact moment, a sharp crack echoed through the night air outside. The reinforced glass window behind Julian shattered into a million pieces as a high-powered sniper round pierced the glass, taking out the primary control unit on the wall beside him.

Before the guards could react, federal flashbang grenades burst through the broken window, blinding the room in a deafening flash of white light and thunderous explosions.
