Chapter 21 - Cornered by the Law

With the official grand jury proceedings underway in the city, the legal system moved with decisive speed. Julian Vance, Arthur Sterling-Cross, and nine senior executives of Apex Global Holdings were brought to the Federal District Court for their formal arraignment.

Detective Brody had secured two gallery passes for me and my mother so we could witness the proceedings. We sat in the front row of the gallery as federal marshals led Julian into the courtroom in heavy orange jumpsuits and wrist chains.

Julian looked broken. The arrogant posture that had characterized his entire life was gone, replaced by a hollow, defeated stare. When his eyes caught mine in the gallery, he paused for a moment, his jaw tightening, but he could no longer speak or hurl threats.

"Defendant Julian Vance," the chief presiding federal judge announced, his voice echoing with absolute authority. "In light of the forty-two federal felony counts against you—including corporate espionage, kidnapping, child endangerment, and judicial corruption—bail is denied. You will remain in maximum-security remand until trial."

Julian lowered his head as his court-appointed defense attorney whispered futilely beside him. The gavel struck the wooden block with a loud, final bang.

"Court is adjourned."

As the marshals led Julian out through the side exit, Detective Brody turned to me and smiled. "He's never seeing the light of day again, Mark. The U.S. Attorney is projecting a minimum three-hundred-year sentence without parole."

"Good," I said softly, holding my mother's hand. "Let him contemplate his choices in the dark."

Outside the courthouse, dozens of journalists and news reporters gathered around the front steps. I stepped up to the podium set up by the Department of Justice, standing beside Detective Brody and Attorney Elena Rodriguez.

"Mr. Vance!" a reporter shouted over the crowd. "What message do you have for the public after surviving this nightmare?"

I looked directly into the news cameras, my voice clear, steady, and resonant.

"A family's love is not something that can be bought, patented, or broken by corporate greed," I said firmly. "My wife was blackmailed, my children were threatened, and my brother tried to destroy everything I held dear. But a father's duty to protect his children is absolute. To anyone who thinks they can harm innocent children for profit—know that the truth will always find you, and justice will always prevail."

The reporters broke into applause as we walked down the steps into our waiting car. The story was told, the record was set straight, and the world finally knew the truth.
