Chapter 24 - The Trap Is Set

Spring arrived at the country estate in a brilliant explosion of blooming flowers, lush green grass, and warm sunshine. The twenty acres of land transformed into a paradise of vibrant colors.
My cybersecurity firm, Vance Systems, had grown into a thriving, highly respected enterprise. I hired four top tier software engineers, establishing a satellite office in town while continuing to work primarily from my home study. We specialized in creating encrypted communication protocols for children's hospitals and humanitarian non-profits, using technology to protect the vulnerable.
Every morning began with a family breakfast. My mother cooked fresh eggs and toast, while Lily practiced her reading skills at the dining table, and Tommy rambled happily about his wooden toy trains.
Detective Brody, who had recently been promoted to Deputy Chief of Police, visited us often on weekends. He became a beloved uncle figure to the kids, bringing them fishing gear and teaching Lily how to cast a line in our private pond.
"You've built something incredible here, Mark," Brody said one warm Saturday afternoon as we sat on the dock watching Lily reel in a small bluegill fish.
"I didn't build it alone, Brody," I replied, holding a fishing rod beside Tommy. "You, my mother, and the people who stood for the truth built this."
"Julian's appeal was rejected by the Circuit Court yesterday," Brody mentioned quietly, looking out over the sparkling water. "He's officially spending the rest of his natural life in Florence ADX."
I nodded slowly, feeling no anger, no hatred—only a quiet, profound sense of final closure. "May he find whatever peace he can in his cell. We've moved on."
"Look, Dad! I caught a fish!" Lily shouted excitedly, holding up her small rod as a shiny fish splashed at the end of the line.
"Great job, Lily!" I laughed, dropping to my knees to help her carefully unhook the fish and release it back into the clear water. "Set him free, sweetie."

She gently placed the fish back into the water, watching it swim away into the depths with a big, bright smile. "Go home to your family, little fish!"
We all laughed, the sound carrying across the peaceful water under the warm spring sun.
