Chapter 17 - Betrayal at the Firm

In the days following the dramatic arrest of Judge Galloway, federal agencies began dismantling the vast corporate web of Apex Global. However, deep within my former software engineering firm—Vance Dynamics—shadows remained. I discovered that Julian's influence had penetrated even my own workplace. My chief software associate, Marcus Kane, had been secretly feeding system access logs to Julian's network for over eighteen months.
I confronted Marcus in our downtown office building accompanied by Detective Brody and federal agents. Marcus sat behind his desk, trembling as federal officers seized his hard drives and private mobile phones.
"I didn't have a choice, Mark!" Marcus wept, pressing his palms together in desperation. "Julian threatened to destroy my family's financial standing! He knew every vulnerability in our cloud infrastructure!"
"You compromised my family's life, Marcus," I said coldly, looking down at the man I had trusted as a partner for five years. "You knew Tommy was sick, and you helped Julian track my movements while I was away in San Francisco."
"I was terrified!" Marcus cried out.
"So was I," I replied softly. "But I didn't sell out my friends."
With Marcus's arrest, the last internal security threat to my technology infrastructure was completely neutralized. My company was re-secured under strict new cryptographic protocols that I authored myself. The remaining corporate assets of Apex BioTech were frozen permanently, and federal receivers took control of their research facilities to ensure no further human experimentation could ever take place.
That evening, I returned to Saint Jude's Hospital. Lily was sitting up in bed, happily drawing pictures of our future farmhouse with bright colored markers. Tommy was giggling in his crib as my mother gently fed him milk.
"Daddy!" Lily squealed, holding up her drawing. "Look! It's a big house with a green yard and a dog!"
I smiled, my heart filling with warmth as I sat on her bed and kissed her forehead. "It's perfect, Lily. And guess what? Next week, we're moving into that exact house."
Lily clapped her hands with joy. "Is Mommy coming too?"
I looked at my mother, who gave me a gentle, understanding nod. I turned back to Lily and took her small hand in mine. "Mommy is going to live in a house nearby, sweetie. But she's going to visit us every single weekend, and we're all going to take care of you and Tommy together."

Lily nodded thoughtfully, accepting the truth with the simple grace of a child who felt safe again. "Okay, Dad. As long as you're here, I'm not scared anymore."
Those words were the greatest gift I had ever received.
