Chapter 5 - A Shadow in the Garden

The horror of what lay inside that hidden room hit me with physical force. I stumbled back against the metal doorframe, my breathing jagged as I stared at the chilling labels on the blood vials. Subject: Thomas Vance - Genetic Strain Apex-9. My eighteen-month-old son, whom I had cradled in my arms as he cried from fever, had been transformed into a living laboratory specimen inside my own home.
"Mark, don't touch anything," Brody shouted, putting on rubber gloves as he stepped up to the control station. "This is a crime scene now. I'm calling in the State Crime Lab and the FBI."
"Brody... look at these camera feeds," I rasped, pointing a shaking finger at the high-definition monitor. "These feeds aren't just recording locally. They're broadcasting live to an external IP address. Someone is watching this right now!"
Before Brody could respond, the computer monitor flickered. The camera feeds vanished, replaced by a dark screen with a single command prompt window. A sudden synthetic chime echoed from the desktop speakers, followed by a dark, deep voice that sent an icy current through my veins.
"Hello, Mark," the voice rasped through the speakers. "It took you longer than I anticipated to crack that lock. You always were a bit slow on the uptake compared to me."
Julian.
Even through the voice modification software, the cadence, the arrogant pause, and the chilling condescension belonged to my older brother.
"Where is my wife, Julian?!" I screamed at the monitor, stepping up to the desk. "What did you do to my son?! If you touched a single hair on his head, I will hunt you to the ends of the earth!"
A cruel, metallic laugh echoed from the speakers. "Always the emotional fool, little brother. You think this is about Sarah? Sarah is nothing more than an obedient tool who did what she had to do to keep you alive. You should be thanking her. If she had told you the truth two years ago, I would have put a bullet through your head before you could even buy a crib for little Tommy."
"You're sick!" I roared. "He's a baby! He's your nephew!"
"He is the future of molecular genetics, Mark," Julian replied coldly. "Apex BioTech wasn't destroyed six years ago—it went underground. Our father's research into cellular regeneration was incomplete, but Tommy carries the rare genetic markers that make full synthesis possible. He holds the key to curing degenerative neurological diseases worth billions on the global market. And you were blissfully ignorant, living your peaceful little suburban dream while Sarah administered his weekly therapy."
"She was poisoning him!" I shouted. "He has a high fever! His body is failing!"
"A minor side effect of the viral vector delivery," Julian dismissed callously. "She panicked when Lily got hurt. Lily wasn't supposed to be in that hallway when my associates delivered the batch. It was an unfortunate accident. But Sarah let her emotion get the better of her, trying to conceal the injury instead of bringing her to a facility where my team could manage it."
"Where is Sarah now?" Brody interjected, stepping in front of the microphone. "This is Detective Marcus Brody, SDPD. We have this facility surrounded, Vance. Your network is exposed."
"Ah, Detective Brody," Julian chuckled smoothly. "Predictable as always, Mark—running to your cop friend. You think calling the police gives you leverage? Check your phone, Mark. Right now."
I pulled my smartphone from my pocket. A new notification flashed on the screen—a live video stream from a remote location.
The video showed Sarah sitting in the backseat of a dark SUV, her face pale, hands bound with heavy zip-ties, and an armed man in a tactical mask sitting beside her. But what made my heart stop was the second video feed playing right beside it.
It was a real-time thermal view of Saint Jude Children's Hospital. A small red blinking dot was positioned directly on the floor above the Pediatric ICU—the exact location where Lily and Tommy were being prepared for surgery.

"If a single police car approaches my secondary location," Julian's voice purred with sinister delight, "or if you try to shut down the server in that room, the explosive charge placed on the HVAC unit directly above Trauma Room 3 will detonate. You have exactly one hour to make a choice, Mark. Walk out of that house alone, meet my courier at the harbor, and hand over your private encryption keys to the company server... or watch your children die."
The monitor went black. The server rack emitted a harsh, piercing alarm, counting down from 60:00 minutes.
