Chapter 26 - The Trial Begins

Life at the Maplewood farm flourished with every passing season. The local community embraced us warmly, and our home became a gathering place for neighborhood harvest festivals, summer barbecues, and children's birthday parties.
My cybersecurity company, Vance Systems, established a scholarship foundation dedicated to funding computer science and bio-ethics education for underprivileged students. We wanted to ensure that the next generation of technological innovators learned that ethics, human dignity, and compassion must always guide technological progress.
On Lily's eighth birthday, we held a grand celebration in the backyard orchard. The trees were heavy with ripe red apples, and long white tables were decorated with colorful balloons and birthday banners.
Detective Brody arrived with a huge wrapped box containing a brand-new bicycle with pink streamers. Sarah brought a magnificent three-tiered chocolate cake decorated with sugar flowers. My mother sat at the head table, surrounded by neighbors and friends, her face lit with radiant joy.
Lily blew out the eight candles on her cake while everyone sang enthusiastically.
"What did you wish for, sweetie?" Sarah asked, hugging Lily tightly.
Lily looked around at the warm circle of family surrounding her—her grandmother, her mother, her little brother Tommy holding a slice of cake, Detective Brody laughing with neighbors, and me standing right beside her.
"I didn't make a wish, Mommy," Lily said with sweet, innocent clarity. "Because everything I ever wanted is already right here."
Her words brought tears of pure happiness to Sarah's eyes, and I pulled them both into a warm hug.
Later that evening, after the guests had departed and the children were tucked safely into their beds, I stood by Lily's bedroom window. The moon was full and bright, casting a gentle silver glow over the quiet fields.
Lily stirred softly in her sleep, clutching her favorite stuffed bear, a peaceful smile resting on her face.
I adjusted her blanket, leaned down, and gently kissed her forehead. "Goodnight, my brave little girl," I whispered softly.

I walked down the hallway to Tommy's room. He was fast asleep, his thumb resting near his cheek, snoring softly under his star-patterned blanket. I kissed his forehead as well, feeling the cool, healthy warmth of his skin.
"Goodnight, my strong little boy," I whispered.
