Chapter 19 - Midnight Interception

Three days before our planned move to the country estate, one final echo of Julian's syndicate attempted a desperate, last-gasp retaliation. A rogue mercenary team that had previously operated under Julian's private security division attempted to break into the federal evidence lockup downtown to destroy the server drives seized from the chemical plant.

At 1:00 AM, my phone buzzed on the nightstand of my hotel room near the hospital. It was Detective Brody.

"Mark, turn on your secure terminal," Brody said urgently. "We have an active breach attempt at the Federal Evidence Facility on 4th Street."

I sat up instantly, grabbing my laptop and connecting to the Department of Justice emergency network. "Did they gain access to the primary servers?"

"They breached the outer perimeter gate," Brody explained over the line. "They're trying to execute a remote wipe sequence on the Apex financial logs that your mother provided. Our cyber unit is trying to block them, but their malware is aggressive!"

"They're using Julian's secondary zero-day exploit," I said, my fingers instantly flying across my laptop keyboard as I initiated my counter-offensive program. "I designed the patch for that specific protocol three days ago! Give me system admin privileges on the facility router!"

Within thirty seconds, I bypassed the facility's compromised firewall and deployed my custom counter-encryption script. On my screen, I watched lines of red malicious code get systematically cordoned off, isolated, and deleted in real-time.

"Code isolated!" I shouted into the headset. "I've locked down their remote access and traced their origin IP address! They're broadcasting from a mobile van parked three blocks away on Commerce Street!"

"Tactical teams are moving to that location now!" Brody reported.

Through the live GPS feed on my screen, I watched federal tactical units corner the black mobile command van on Commerce Street. Within four minutes, the three rogue operatives were disarmed, forced out of the vehicle, and taken into custody without a single shot fired.

The final attempt to erase the evidence against Julian's network had completely failed.

The next morning, the U.S. Attorney announced that all evidentiary servers had been fully verified, secured, and sealed for trial. The legal armor protecting my children and mother was now absolute and unbreakable.

I walked down the hospital corridor to Room 412. The morning sun was streaming through the large windows, bathing the room in warm, gold light. Lily was standing on her own two feet, testing her newly healed leg with small, confident steps, while Tommy clapped his tiny hands in joy.

"Look, Dad!" Lily beamed, standing tall and proud. "No cast! No walker!"

I dropped to one knee and opened my arms wide. She ran straight into my hug, her small arms wrapping tight around my neck.

"You are the strongest girl in the world, Lily," I whispered, holding her close as tears of pure happiness welled in my eyes. "Now come on. Our new home is waiting for us.
