Chapter 13 - The Mask Falls Off

By 3:00 AM, the hospital room had settled into a tranquil quiet. Lily was fast asleep, her breathing deep and restful, while Tommy snored softly in his crib. I remained seated in the chair between their beds, my laptop resting on my knees, monitoring the real-time operational feed sent by Vance Sterling from Zurich.

On my screen, a high-resolution satellite map of Zurich displayed a red tracking dot moving rapidly toward the St. Moritz Private Clinic—a secluded, high-walled medical complex perched on the snow-covered hills overlooking Lake Zurich.

"Sterling, do you have eyes on the facility?" I whispered into my encrypted headset.

"We are at the perimeter gate now, Mark," Sterling's calm voice echoed through my earpiece. "My team has bypassed the outer security cameras using your digital override code. We're moving toward the west wing where patient records indicate Eleanor Vance is housed under the alias 'Hilda Weiss.'"

My heart beat faster against my chest. "Is there heavy security inside?"

"Three armed guards stationed in the administrative lobby," Sterling reported softly over the static. "Standard private security. They aren't expecting a tactical team. Stand by."

For five agonizing minutes, all I could hear over the radio feed was the faint crunch of snow under boots, followed by the soft muffled thuds of silenced non-lethal pulse weapons.

"Lobby cleared," Sterling reported smoothly. "We are at Room 204. Stand by for visual verification."

The live video feed from Sterling's chest camera activated on my laptop screen. The camera moved down a pristine, white-tiled medical corridor, stopping before a heavy mahogany door labeled 204. Sterling opened the door quietly.

Inside, sitting in an armchair beside a glass window looking out over the moonlit snow, was an elderly woman wrapped in a knitted white shawl. Her silver hair was neatly braided, and her face, though lined with age, carried the undeniable grace and quiet nobility of my mother. She was holding a small silver frame containing an old photograph of me and Julian as young boys on a summer fishing trip.

My throat tightened. Tears welled in my eyes as I stared at the screen. Eight years. I had been lied to for eight years, believing she was lost in the fog of memory loss, while she sat alone in a gilded cage thousands of miles away.

"Eleanor Vance?" Sterling asked softly, stepping into the room.

The elderly woman turned her head slowly. Her eyes—bright, sharp, and unmistakably clear—focused on the armed tactical operator standing in her doorway. There was no confusion in her gaze, no Alzheimer's fog. Only immediate, sharp comprehension.

"You're not Julian's men," she said, her voice clear and resonant. "Who sent you?"

Sterling held up a small tablet screen displaying my face via live video. "Your son sent us, Mrs. Vance."

My mother looked at the tablet screen, and for the first time in eight years, a brilliant, emotional smile broke across her face. "Mark... my sweet boy. You finally found me."

"Mom!" I cried softly into the microphone, tears streaming down my face. "Mom, I'm here! You're safe now! Sterling is getting you out of there!"

"I knew you would come, Mark," she said, her voice trembling with motherly pride. "I knew you were smart enough to break Julian's codes. Is Sarah safe? Are the children safe?"

May you like

"They're safe, Mom," I reassured her. "Tommy and Lily are in the hospital here in the US, but they're completely out of danger. Julian is in federal custody."

"Thank God," she breathed, standing up from her chair with dignity. "Then it's time to destroy the rest of his legacy. Sterling, in the lining of my coat hanging in that closet, there is a micro-hard drive containing the full financial ledgers of Apex BioTech's international political backers. Take it. It's time to bring down everyone who helped Julian.
