Chapter 12 - Cleaning House

Forty-eight hours after the courtroom arrest, the atmosphere inside the corporate headquarters of Vance Enterprises was transformed. The dark executive cloud that had hung over the seventy-second floor for years had completely lifted.

Rebecca sat in the executive office—now cleared of Daniel’s gaudy gold trophies and self-aggrandizing portraits—reviewing the restructured company ledger. Standing around her desk were Julian, Arthur Hayes, and the newly appointed board executive committee.

"The recovery has been miraculous, Mrs. Vance," Arthur Hayes reported, his face glowing with newfound relief. "Once news broke that you personally guaranteed the pension funds with twenty million dollars from the Sterling Trust, our stock price rallied thirty-four percent in a single trading day."

"And the SEC?" Rebecca asked, looking up from her screen.

"They dropped their formal investigation into the company," Julian added proudly, resting his hands on the mahogany desk. "They recognized that Daniel and Victor acted as rogue individuals without board authorization. All frozen credit lines have been fully restored by the banks."

Rebecca smiled, feeling a profound sense of peace settling into her chest. "Good. What about our floor managers and warehouse employees?"

"Julian held a town hall meeting with all five thousand employees this morning," Hayes said, beaming at Julian. "He announced a ten percent wage increase for line workers funded directly by reducing executive bonuses. The entire workforce gave him a standing ovation."

Julian blushed slightly. "It was the right thing to do, Mom. They kept this company alive while Daniel was spending thousands on private jets and champagne."

A knock sounded at the door, and Rebecca’s private secretary stepped in. "Mrs. Vance, there is a young woman downstairs in the lobby demanding to see you. She claims it is an emergency regarding Daniel."

Rebecca exchanged a subtle look with Julian. "Is it Chloe?"

"Yes, ma'am," the secretary confirmed. "Security was about to escort her off the premises, but she insists she has information you need."

Rebecca leaned back in her chair. "Send her up."

Five minutes later, Chloe stepped into the grand executive suite. But she looked nothing like the glamorized, arrogant mistress who had walked into Rebecca’s penthouse days ago.

Her designer makeup was washed out, her blonde hair was pulled into a messy ponytail, and she wore plain jeans and a cheap jacket. She looked terrified, exhausted, and completely stripped of her former vanity.

Chloe stood near the door, clutching her knock-off handbag tightly, unable to meet Rebecca’s calm, commanding gaze.

"You wanted to see me, Chloe?" Rebecca asked softly, gesturing to a seat across from her desk.

Chloe didn't sit. She took a timid step forward, her voice trembling. "Mrs. Vance... I came to apologize. I know... I know what I said to you in your apartment was unforgivable."

"You told me to take out the trash, if I remember correctly," Rebecca said smoothly, without a hint of bitterness.

Chloe’s cheeks flushed crimson with shame. "I was stupid. Daniel told me you were an awful woman who was leeching off his money. He told me he owned everything and that you were just bitter. I was naive and greedy, and I let him use me."

"You weren't naive, Chloe," Julian said sharply from the side. "You were eager to enjoy the fruits of a twenty-three-year marriage you did nothing to build."

Chloe squeezed her eyes shut, tears leaking down her face. "I know! I know, and I'm paying for it! The landlord kicked me out of the Soho apartment, my talent agency dropped me, and my bank accounts are locked because of Daniel's illegal gifts! I have nowhere to go, Mrs. Vance. I'm three months behind on my car payment, and the news media is harassing my family!"

Rebecca looked at the young woman. She saw no formidable enemy—only a foolish, shallow girl who had allowed her ambition to blind her character.

"Why are you here, Chloe?" Rebecca asked quietly. "What do you actually want?"

Chloe unzipped her handbag and pulled out a small black leather journal with a silver latch.

"Daniel kept a private diary of contacts," Chloe whispered, placing it on the desk. "It contains the real names of the offshore brokers in Zurich and the Cayman Islands who helped him transfer company funds over the last three years. He told me to burn it if anything ever happened to him. But I want to give it to you."

Rebecca looked at the journal, then up at Chloe. "Why give this to me?"

"Because," Chloe sobbed quietly, "I realized that the only person in this entire city who ever acted with actual class and dignity was you. I don't expect you to forgive me, Mrs. Vance. I just wanted to do one right thing before I leave New York."

Rebecca looked at the book, then tapped her desk phone. "Arthur, please step in."

Arthur Pendelton opened the door.

"Take this journal to our forensic team," Rebecca instructed. "And Arthur?"

"Yes, Mrs. Vance?"

Rebecca looked at Chloe, whose shoulders were shaking with quiet sobs. "Provide Miss Chloe with two thousand dollars in relocation assistance and a train ticket back to her hometown in Ohio. On the condition that she never steps foot in Manhattan again."

Chloe gasped, looking up in complete shock. "You're... you're giving me money?"

"I'm giving you a chance to rebuild your life somewhere else," Rebecca said firmly, her tone leaving no room for negotiation. "Do not waste it."

Chloe bowed her head deeply, tears pouring onto her jacket. "Thank you, Mrs. Vance... Thank you."

As Arthur led Chloe out of the office, Julian looked at his mother with deep admiration. "You are far more generous than she deserved, Mom."

"Generosity isn't about what they deserve, Julian," Rebecca said softly, closing her desk folder. "It's about who we choose to be."
