Chapter 3 - The Cold Streets of Manhattan

The heavy glass doors of the luxury skyscraper slammed shut behind Daniel and Chloe, locking with an ominous digital click. The crisp autumn night air hit Daniel like a cold bucket of water.

Streetlights reflected off the damp pavement of Park Avenue. On the curb stood three leather luggage bags and Chloe's pink suitcase, dumped unceremoniously by the building staff.

"This is embarrassing!" Chloe shrieked, wrapping her thin designer jacket tightly around herself as pedestrians glanced over at them. "Look at us! We're standing on the sidewalk like homeless people! Call your driver, Daniel! Call the limo!"

Daniel pulled out his iPhone, his fingers shaking so violently he almost dropped it. He tapped the contact for his private chauffeur, Marcus.

"Marcus, get the Mercedes around front right now. We're standing on Park Avenue."

There was a long pause on the other end of the line. "I'm sorry, Mr. Vance. I no longer work for Vance Enterprises."

Daniel froze. "What are you talking about?! I pay your salary!"

"Actually, sir, my contract was with Sterling Executive Fleet Management," Marcus replied coolly. "Mrs. Vance informed me two hours ago that my services were transferred to her private account. The Mercedes has been returned to the fleet garage. Goodnight, sir."

The line went dead.

"Marcus? Marcus!" Daniel yelled into the phone, but only the dial tone answered.

"What did he say?" Chloe demanded, grabbing his lapel. "Where is the car?"

"Shut up for one second, Chloe!" Daniel barked, pulling up his banking app. He entered his passcode, hit thumb recognition, and waited for the balance screen to load.

The spinning wheel spun for three agonizing seconds. When the screen refreshed, Daniel’s breath hitched.

Primary Checking: $1,240.00

Joint Savings: $0.00

Corporate Draw Line: FROZEN - PENDING AUDIT

"No... this is a glitch. This is a system error," Daniel stammered, tapping the screen frantically. He called his head of corporate finance, Arthur Hayes.

"Arthur! What the hell is going on with my accounts? Why is my draw line frozen?"

"Daniel?" Arthur’s voice was tense, filled with static and background noise. "Where have you been? All hell is breaking loose at the office. The SEC sent a formal inquiry forty-five minutes ago regarding the asset backing on our Series B funding round."

Daniel felt as if the sidewalk beneath him was tilting. "The SEC? On what grounds?!"

"Someone leaked the original trust capital agreements," Arthur explained breathlessly. "It turns out forty percent of the collateral you pledged to the venture capital group wasn't owned by Vance Enterprises—it was titled under the Sterling Trust. When the trust liquidated its holdings today, the collateral vanished. The bank automatically triggered a freeze on all corporate lines to prevent capital flight!"

Daniel slumped against a street lamp, his phone pressed against his ear. "Rebecca... she released the trust filings?"

"I don't know who released them, Daniel, but the board is calling an emergency meeting for eight o'clock tomorrow morning," Arthur said sharply. "You better have an explanation for where eighty million dollars of missing collateral went, or they're going to strip your voting rights before noon."

The call cut off.

Chloe was watching him, her big blue eyes narrowing as she picked up on the sheer panic radiating from him. The helpless, defeated look on his face was something she had never seen before.

"Daniel..." she said, her voice dropping the sweet, high-pitched tone she usually used. "Are you telling me you don't have money?"

"I have money!" Daniel snapped, grabbing his luggage handle. "It's just a temporary accounting freeze! A misunderstanding! My lawyers will fix this by tomorrow morning!"

"Right," Chloe said slowly, stepping back from her luggage. "And where are we staying tonight? At the St. Regis?"

"We'll get a room at the Plaza," Daniel said, waving his arm wildly to hail a yellow taxi. "I'll use my personal credit card."

A yellow cab pulled up to the curb. Daniel opened the door, threw his leather bags into the back, and turned to Chloe. "Get in."

Chloe looked at the yellow cab, then looked at Daniel's rumpled suit and pale, sweaty face. She pulled her smartphone out, tapped her screen, and called an Uber.

"I think I'm going to stay at my friend's place in Soho tonight, Daniel," she said coolly, her voice dripping with sudden distance.

Daniel stared at her in disbelief. "What? Chloe, I just gave up my wife for you! I brought you into my home!"

"No, Daniel," Chloe corrected with a cold, hollow laugh. "You brought me into your wife's home. And you don't even have a car to take me home in. Call me when your board meeting is over... if you still have a job."

An Uber Black pulled up directly behind the taxi. Chloe picked up her pink suitcase, tossed it into the trunk without waiting for the driver, climbed into the leather back seat, and slammed the door.

Daniel stood alone on the curb, surrounded by exhaust fumes and the cold roar of Manhattan traffic, realizing that the house of cards he had built over twenty-three years was collapsing faster than he could breathe.
