Chapter 16 - Martha's Vineyard

The ocean breeze was fresh and cool, carrying the salty scent of the Atlantic across the rolling green hills of Martha’s Vineyard. The shingle-style coastal cottage sat atop a quiet cliff overlooking a private white-sand beach where gentle waves crashed rhythmically against the shore.

Rebecca stood on the broad wooden deck, wearing a soft cream cashmere sweater and linen pants, holding a warm cup of coffee. The peaceful silence was therapeutic. There were no ringing phones, no emergency board meetings, and no sirens blaring down Manhattan avenues.

Footsteps echoed softly on the wooden deck behind her.

Gabriel Vance stepped out, holding two warm blankets. He gently draped one over Rebecca’s shoulders, his hands lingering for a gentle moment on her arms before he stepped beside her to look out at the ocean.

"Is it quiet enough for you?" Gabriel asked, his warm brown eyes filled with soft affection.

"It’s almost too quiet," Rebecca confessed with a soft smile. "I spent so many years waiting for the next crisis, the next lie, or the next disaster that my brain keeps looking for a fire to put out."

Gabriel turned to face her, leaning against the wooden railing. "The fires are all gone, Rebecca. You put them out."

Rebecca looked into his eyes—eyes that carried the same sharp intelligence as Daniel’s, but were softened by years of human compassion and dedicated medical service. Gabriel had spent his career performing life-saving open-heart surgeries, never seeking the public spotlight that Daniel so desperately craved.

"I still find it hard to believe," Rebecca murmured, gazing at the distant lighthouse. "How two brothers raised under the same roof could become such completely different men."

"Daniel was obsessed with proving he was bigger than life," Gabriel explained softly. "Our father always favored him, praising his ego while ignoring his character. Daniel learned early on that appearance mattered more than substance. I chose to go into medicine because I wanted to touch real life, not build an illusion."

He reached out, his warm, strong fingers gently catching Rebecca’s hand.

"When I heard what he did to you on Park Avenue," Gabriel said, his voice dropping to a low, intense whisper, "my heart broke for you. But I also knew that Daniel had made the biggest mistake of his life. He threw away the only genuine anchor he ever had."

Rebecca felt a sweet warmth blooming in her chest. For years, she had felt invisible, unvalued, and discarded. But standing beside Gabriel, she felt seen in a way she hadn't experienced in decades.

"I didn't lose my anchor, Gabriel," Rebecca whispered back, looking up into his eyes. "I just realized I was meant to sail my own ship."

Gabriel smiled, a breathtakingly genuine smile that lit up his handsome features. "Then allow me to be the wind at your back, Rebecca. Whenever you need it."

He leaned in slowly, giving her all the time in the world to step away. But Rebecca didn't step away. She closed the small distance between them, meeting his lips in a gentle, breathtaking kiss that tasted of ocean air, fresh beginnings, and absolute liberation.
