Chapter 18 - The Final Trap

Two days later.
In the executive office of Sterling-Vance Enterprises, Julian was reviewing the company’s international banking alerts when a red notification flagged on his security monitor.
Julian tapped the screen, opening an encrypted transaction report forwarded directly from the Department of Justice Financial Crimes Division.
His eyes widened as he read the alert.
'ATTEMPTED LIQUIDATION OF AEGIS HOLDINGS SUB-ACCOUNT #409 (LIECHTENSTEIN). SIGNATORY MATCH: DANIEL VANCE.'
Julian immediately pressed the intercom button for his mother's office. "Mom, please come to my desk right now."
Rebecca walked into Julian’s office a moment later, holding a stack of architectural blueprints for their new clean-energy facility in upstate New York. "What is it, Julian?"
"Dad just signed a illegal transfer order from prison," Julian said, turning the monitor toward her. "He and Victor attempted to move five million dollars of hidden offshore money from a secret Liechtenstein account to Panama."
Rebecca stood beside her son, reading the screen calmly. She didn't look surprised. She looked almost saddened by the sheer predictability of their foolishness.
"They really never learn, do they?" Rebecca said softly, shaking her head.
"The federal authorities intercepted the wire transfer forty-five minutes ago," Julian explained. "Because Dad signed the transfer authorization while serving a federal sentence for financial fraud, it constitutes a new, independent felony offense."
"What does that mean for his sentence?" Rebecca asked quietly.
"The prosecutor contacted Arthur ten minutes ago," Julian answered. "Because this proves a ongoing criminal intent and attempt to launder hidden stolen capital, the judge is revoking his plea agreement entirely. Daniel is being transferred to a maximum-security federal penitentiary in Pennsylvania."
Julian looked at his mother. "His seven-year sentence just got extended to twenty-five years without the possibility of parole."
Rebecca looked out the high window toward the bustling city below.
Twenty-five years. Daniel would be nearly seventy-eight years old when he saw the outside world again.
"He had a chance for redemption, Julian," Rebecca said softly, her voice filled with quiet reflection. "He was offered mercy, a reduced sentence, and a path to peace. But he couldn't let go of his greed."

"He chose his own prison, Mom," Julian said gently, placing a hand on his mother’s arm. "You gave him every opportunity to choose differently."
"I know," Rebecca nodded, turning back to her son with a peaceful, untroubled smile. "Let the authorities handle Daniel. We have a ground-breaking ceremony in Albany tomorrow, and I want everything to be perfect."
