Chapter 4 - A Mother's Legacy

While Daniel was stranded on the cold sidewalk of Park Avenue, a sleek black Maybach glided smoothly into the private underground parking garage of the Tribeca Grand Tower.

The driver, Marcus, stepped out and opened the rear passenger door with crisp professional courtesy. "We have arrived, Mrs. Vance."

"Thank you, Marcus," Rebecca said softly, stepping out onto the spotless concrete. She wore a tailored ivory coat that caught the subtle warm lights of the executive garage.

She took the private elevator directly up to the top floor—a stunning, three-story penthouse overlooking the Hudson River, flooded with warm light, lush green indoor plants, and floor-to-ceiling glass offering an unobstructed view of the Statue of Liberty.

Standing in the center of the vast living room was a handsome twenty-two-year-old young man with sharp brown eyes, broad shoulders, and a smile that possessed all of Rebecca’s warmth and none of Daniel’s arrogance.

"Mom!" Julian cried out, stepping forward and wrapping his mother in a tight, protective hug.

Rebecca held her son tightly, burying her face against his shoulder for a brief moment before pulling back to look at him. "Look at you. Did you finish your finals at Columbia?"

"Passed with top honors," Julian smiled, leading her toward a plush navy sofa where two glasses of sparkling mineral water and a thick leather binder rested on a mahogany table. "How did it go at Park Avenue?"

"It went exactly as planned," Rebecca replied, taking a seat and resting her hands on her lap. "Your father thought he was delivering the final blow. He brought that young woman into the apartment and told me to get out."

Julian’s eyes flashed with anger. "He really did that? In front of you?"

"He did," Rebecca said calmly. "He thought he had stripped me of my dignity, my home, and my purpose. He truly believed I was a weak woman who had nowhere else to go."

"He forgot who raised him," Julian said with a fierce, quiet pride. "He forgot that while he was playing CEO at golf clubs, you were managing the Sterling Family Trust, directing the real estate investments, and quietly buying up forty percent of Vance Enterprises' debt through offshore holding companies."

"He didn't forget, Julian," Rebecca said, picking up the glass of water. "He never knew. He was so blinded by his own vanity that he assumed every success he had was entirely his own doing. He took my silence for stupidity."

Julian opened the thick leather binder on the table, flipping to a series of financial audit documents stamped with federal seals.

"The trap is sprung, Mom," Julian said, his voice turning business-like. "When you executed the sale of the penthouse back to the trust, it triggered the covenant clause in Vance Enterprises' prime credit line. Dad's CFO tried to hide the missing eighty million dollars in collateral by shifting funds from the employee pension trust."

Rebecca’s eyes narrowed. "He touched the employee pension trust?"

"He signed off on the transfer three days ago," Julian confirmed, pointing to a signature on the page. "Daniel was desperate to cover the margins on his short bets against tech stock. He thought he could replace the pension funds before the quarterly audit next month."

Rebecca sighed, a mixture of sadness and righteous coldness washing over her face. "I gave that man twenty-three years of my life. I gave him a family, a reputation, and every opportunity to be an honorable man. But stealing from his own workers... from the people who work twelve hours a day in his warehouses... that is unforgivable."

"What’s your next move?" Julian asked.

Rebecca looked out the window at the glittering lights of the Manhattan skyline. "Tomorrow morning at eight o'clock, the board of Vance Enterprises is holding an emergency meeting to address the missing collateral. Daniel thinks he can lie his way through it."

She looked back at her son, her green eyes sharp as polished flint.

"I'm going to that meeting, Julian. Not as his wife. But as the majority debt-holder of Vance Enterprises."
