Chapter 2 - The Locks Are Changed

The private elevator chimes pierced the tense silence of the penthouse lobby like a funeral bell. Daniel was still holding the crumpled property document in his shaking fist when the double doors slid open to reveal four burly men in black security uniforms, flanked by a sleek man in a tailored charcoal suit holding a electronic key card decoder.
"Mr. Daniel Vance?" the man in the charcoal suit asked, his voice crisp and devoid of any emotion.
"Who the hell are you?" Daniel demanded, trying to regain his composure by puffing out his chest. "Do you know who I am? I'm the CEO of Vance Enterprises! Get out of my home before I have you arrested for trespassing!"
The suit didn't flinch. He held up an official city marshal eviction notice along with the newly minted deed of purchase. "As of six o'clock this evening, ownership of Penthouse A at 432 Park Avenue was officially transferred to Blackwood Holdings LLC. I am Arthur Pendelton, legal counsel for the new owners. You have ten minutes to collect your personal clothing and vacate the premises."
Chloe squeaked in horror. "Ten minutes?! Are you insane? My designer bags are still in boxes downstairs! Daniel, do something!"
"This is bullshit!" Daniel roared, stepping directly into the attorney's face. "My wife sold this behind my back! The court will throw this sale out tomorrow morning! Rebecca has no authority—"
"Mrs. Rebecca Vance was the sole trustee of the Sterling Trust," Pendelton interrupted calmly, tapping the screen of his tablet. "The trust deed was filed twenty-three years ago, prior to your marriage, with zero marital asset co-mingling clauses. You have never owned a single brick of this building, Mr. Vance. You were merely a non-paying guest."
Pendelton gestured to the four security guards. "Gentlemen, please assist Mr. Vance and his associate in gathering their immediate personal items. Anything left after seven-ten PM will be cataloged and placed in storage at your expense."
"Daniel!" Chloe screamed, grabbing his arm and shaking him frantically. "Tell me this is a prank! You said you owned three yachts, two penthouses, and a private jet! You said I was going to be the first lady of Manhattan tech!"
"Shut up, Chloe!" Daniel snapped, shoving her hand off him as sweat began to bead along his hairline. His mind was racing at frantic speed. How could Rebecca do this? Calm, compliant, forgiving Rebecca? She had always endured his late nights, his distant behavior, his blatant disrespect. She had never raised her voice in twenty-three years.
"Where did she go?" Daniel muttered under his breath, his eyes wide with a mixture of rage and burgeoning panic. "Where did Rebecca get an apartment?"
"If you are referring to Mrs. Vance," Pendelton said, offering a tight, polite smile, "she took the elevator down five minutes ago to her personal car. Now, Mr. Vance, I suggest you grab your coat. The locksmith is already resetting the biometric entry panel."
A loud drill noise suddenly reverberated through the grand entrance as a technician went to work on the high-tech front door lock. The digital screen flashed crimson before dying completely.
Chloe ran toward the master bedroom, grabbing her silver Louis Vuitton duffel bag and shoving whatever branded dresses she could reach inside. "I can't believe this! You brought me here to flex and now I'm getting kicked out by security like a squatter!"
"I said quiet!" Daniel shouted, lunging into the master closet to grab his leather briefcase containing his private hard drives and corporate ledgers. But when he reached the top shelf where he kept his backup drives, the velvet box was completely empty.
His heart dropped into his stomach.
"No... no, no, no," Daniel mumbled, frantically sweeping his hands across the empty shelf. The back drives—the ones containing the off-shore accounts, the hidden shell company transactions, the private financial records of Vance Enterprises—were gone.
In their place sat a single white note written in elegant cursive script:
'You told me to take out the trash, Daniel. I made sure to clean out the recycling too. - R.'
Daniel stood frozen in the dark walk-in closet, the white paper fluttering in his trembling hand. Outside, the security guards were escorting Chloe out toward the elevator, her high heels clicking frantically as she hurled insults at everyone in sight.
"Time's up, Mr. Vance," the head guard called out from the doorway. "Please step away from the closet and walk to the elevator."

Daniel turned slowly, his face pale as ghost linen. He realized in that instant that Rebecca hadn't just reacted to his cruel joke today. This wasn't an impulsive act of a bitter wife.
This was a execution that had been planned with mathematical precision.
