Chapter 24 - A Final Letter

On a quiet Tuesday afternoon, a official envelope stamped with the Federal Bureau of Prisons seal arrived at the Connecticut estate.

Gabriel brought the mail into Rebecca’s sunlit study. He handed her the letter softly. "It’s from Daniel."

Rebecca looked at the brown envelope for a moment. She opened it gently and pulled out a single sheet of lined notebook paper written in shaky, faded blue ink.

'Rebecca,

I am writing this letter because the prison doctor tells me my health is deteriorating. I have congestive heart failure, and I likely do not have much time left.

I spend my days looking at four grey walls, remembering the night I told you to take out the trash. I thought I was strong, clever, and untouchable. I was a fool.

You built my life, Rebecca. You held up every wall of my existence, and when I pushed you away, my world collapsed because you were the foundation.

I don't expect your forgiveness. I know I don't deserve it. But I wanted you to know that in my final days, I finally see who you truly were—and who I failed to be.

Tell Julian I am sorry.

- Daniel'

Rebecca read the letter twice. She felt no anger, no triumph, and no joy in his suffering. Only a quiet, solemn sorrow for a man who had traded an extraordinary life for empty glitter.

She folded the letter, placed it inside her desk drawer, and closed it.
