Chapter 10 - The Betrayal Within

The silence in the server room was suffocating. The barrel of the guard’s gun was steady, pointed directly at Clara’s chest. Lily squeezed her eyes shut, burying her face into Clara’s neck.
"Any last words, CEO Vance?" Julian asked, leaning against a server rack with an insufferable smirk.
Clara didn't flinch. She looked past the gun barrel, straight into the eyes of the lead security guard holding the weapon.
"Captain Vance," Clara said softly, her tone startlingly calm.
The lead guard paused. His finger on the trigger visibly stiffened.
"Did you forget who signed your contract five years ago when you left the Marine Corps, Thomas?" Clara asked, her eyes searching the guard's face. "My father hired you to head the hospital security team because you served under my late uncle in Fallujah. He trusted you with his life."
"Thomas?" Julian snapped, his smile fading. "What are you waiting for? Shoot her!"
Captain Thomas slowly lowered his weapon, his jaw clenched tight. "You told me she was embezzling foundation funds, Mr. Sterling. You told me she was trying to sell patient data to foreign competitors."
"She is!" Julian shouted. "She’s insane! Do your job!"
"My job is to protect this institution and the Vance family," Thomas said, his voice deep and resolute. He suddenly swung his pistol around, aiming it directly at Julian’s head. "Drop your weapons, all of you! Now!"
The other three security guards hesitated, caught off guard by their captain's sudden turn.
"Are you out of your mind?" Julian screamed, taking a step back. "I pay your salary! I double your pay starting tonight!"
"You paid me with blood money," Thomas spat. "I saw what was happening in those sub-basement rooms. I was told those were isolation patients with contagious diseases. You lied to me."
Before Julian could react, Thomas stepped forward and delivered a devastating right hook to Julian’s jaw. The sound of cracking bone echoed through the room as Julian crashed heavily onto the hard tile floor, groaning in agony, blood spilling from his lip.
The other three guards immediately dropped their firearms, raising their hands in surrender.
"Marcus, grab their weapons!" Clara ordered instantly.
Marcus scrambled forward, gathering the handguns off the floor.
Captain Thomas turned to Clara, offering a crisp nod of respect. "Ms. Vance. Your father was a good man. I'm sorry I let this snake deceive me."
"You did the right thing, Thomas," Clara said, relief washing over her. "Now, we have a board meeting to crash."
Julian groaned on the floor, clutching his broken jaw, staring up at Clara with pure hatred. "You... you think you've won? The board... they're voting right now... you're already ousted..."
Clara looked down at Julian, her eyes as cold as arctic ice.

"Then let's go make my grand appearance," Clara said smoothly. "Captain Thomas, drag him."
