Chapter 6 - The Secret Protocol

Marcus sank to his knees against the office door, burying his face in his hands. "I'm sorry, Clara... I was broke after the divorce, and Julian offered me a way out. I thought it was just standard tax avoidance. I didn't know he was stealing from the pediatric fund or testing illegal drugs on patients!"
Clara knelt beside her brother, placing a hand on his trembling shoulder. "Listen to me, Marcus. We don't have time for guilt right now. Did you actually sign those offshore documents yourself, or did Julian forge your digital key?"
Marcus looked up, wiping his eyes. "He... he had my administrative access code, but the final biometric confirmation requires my physical thumbprint. He hasn't gotten that yet."
"Then you haven't committed a crime yet," Clara said firmly. "He's bluffing to break you. We need to get out of this room."
"How?" Marcus asked, looking around the sealed room. "The doors are reinforced steel-core oak. The windows are double-paned bulletproof glass. We're on the twelfth floor."
Clara stood up and walked over to the large bookshelf lining the back wall. Her father had spent forty years in this office. She remembered coming here as a child, watching him work late into the night.
"Dad was paranoid about corporate espionage," Clara said, scanning the rows of medical textbooks. "When he built this executive suite, he installed a private service staircase that leads directly to the maintenance sub-basement. He called it Protocol Zero."
She reached out and pulled a thick leather-bound volume of *Gray's Anatomy* on the third shelf. A quiet mechanical click echoed behind the wall, and a portion of the bookshelf swung inward, revealing a dark, narrow concrete stairwell.
Marcus gasped in shock. "I worked in this building for six years and never knew that was here!"
"Dad only trusted people who earned it," Clara said quietly. "Grab the emergency flashlight from my desk drawer. We're going down."
They stepped into the narrow stairwell, and Clara pulled the heavy door shut behind them. The dark passage smelled of concrete, ozone, and old paper. Using the dim beam of the flashlight, they hurried down the steep flight of stairs.
"Where does this lead?" Marcus whispered as they descended rapidly.
"To the sub-basement research labs," Clara replied, her voice grim. "The place where Julian is keeping his off-the-books clinical trial patients. If we want to destroy Julian, we don't just need financial records. We need physical proof of his crimes—and we need to secure Lily before he realizes we escaped."
As they reached the sixth-floor landing inside the secret stairwell, Clara suddenly stopped. She held up her hand for silence.
Through the heavy concrete wall, she could hear faint, echoing voices coming from the hospital's main ventilation shaft.
"...make sure the dosage is doubled," a voice said. Clara recognized it immediately—it was Dr. Harrison. "When the CEO’s child passes away from 'complications', make sure the lab reports blame a pre-existing genetic defect. No one investigates a tragic sudden illness."
Clara’s grip on the flashlight tightened until her knuckles turned white.
"And what about the CEO herself?" another voice—a security guard—asked.
"Once the board vote passes, Julian will have her moved to the psychiatric wing under heavy sedation," Harrison replied callously. "She won't be speaking to anyone for a very long time."
Clara looked at Marcus in the dim light. Her eyes were burning with cold, focused fury.

"Change of plan," Clara whispered. "We aren't just getting evidence. We're taking down the whole medical board tonight."
