Chapter 16 - The Final Confrontation

Clara walked slowly toward the police cruiser where Brenda stood crying softly, her head bowed in deep humiliation as officers prepared to place her in the backseat.
"Brenda," Clara said gently.
Brenda looked up, her eyes red and swollen with tears. "Ms. Vance... please... I'm so sorry... I didn't know you were the CEO... if I had known—"
"That’s the point, Brenda," Clara interrupted, her voice firm yet devoid of anger. "If you had known I was wealthy, you would have treated me like royalty. But because you thought I was poor, you treated me like trash."
"I was just following the rules Dr. Harrison gave us!" Brenda sobbed, wringing her hands inside the metal cuffs. "He told us to discourage homeless people from coming in! He said it looked bad for the hospital!"
"Rules don't excuse a lack of basic humanity," Clara said softly. "You looked at a suffering four-year-old child and saw a nuisance. You threw her money onto the floor. Do you know what could have happened to her if I hadn't been able to treat her?"
Brenda hung her head, weeping silently. "I'm sorry... I'm so sorry..."
"The prosecutor told me you weren't involved in the sub-basement operations," Clara said. "You won't be going to prison for corporate treason like Julian or Harrison. But you will serve community service, and your nursing license in this state will be revoked."
Brenda nodded weakly, accepting her fate. "I deserve it. I forgot why I became a nurse in the first place."
"I hope you remember one day," Clara said. "Because the world needs healers, Brenda. Not gatekeepers."
Clara turned and walked back toward the hospital entrance, leaving Brenda behind in the police cruiser as it drove away into the morning light.
Inside the lobby, staff members had already begun cleaning up. The old sign near the front counter that read *INSURANCE PROOF REQUIRED PRIOR TO TRIAGE* had been torn down. In its place, a temporary banner read: *EVERY PATIENT DESERVES RESPECT AND CARE.*
Marcus met Clara near the elevators, a wide smile on his face. "The stock price stabilized, Clara. In fact, after your press conference, public donations to the hospital foundation reached three million dollars in just two hours!"
"That's wonderful news, Marcus," Clara smiled, feeling the weight of the world finally lifting off her shoulders. "How is Dr. Aris doing with the new pediatric wing expansion?"
"He's already drafting the plans," Marcus said cheerfully. "And guess what? We found a stack of silver coins on the front desk counter."
Clara paused. "The coins I brought in last night?"
Marcus pulled a clear plastic display box from his pocket. Inside were the exact fifty dollars in silver coins Clara had placed on Brenda's counter.

"The staff collected them from the floor last night," Marcus said, handing the box to Clara. "They want to mount them in the lobby as a permanent reminder of the night our hospital remembered its soul."
