Chapter 8 - The Rescue in Room 104

The second guard drew his taser, his eyes wide with shock as he saw his partner groaning on the floor. "Freeze! Don't move!"

Marcus acted on pure instinct. He grabbed the heavy oxygen tank beside him and kicked it hard across the wet rubber runner. The heavy cylinder struck the guard’s shins, knocking his feet out from under him. The guard crashed violently onto the back of his head, dropping his taser and going limp.

"Nice kick," Clara said, panting as rain-like sprinkler water soaked through her tailored black suit.

"I played soccer in college," Marcus gasped, wiping water from his eyes. "Quick, get the keycard!"

Clara scooped up the black electronic keycard from the floor and sprinted toward Room 104. She swiped the card through the reader beside the heavy steel door. A green light flashed, and the lock clicked open.

Inside, Dr. Harrison was standing over Lily’s bed, holding a syringe filled with a clear liquid. A young female lab technician stood beside him, looking terrified as the fire alarms blared.

"What is the meaning of this—" Harrison began, turning toward the door.

Clara didn't hesitate. She lunged forward, grabbing the syringe directly out of Harrison’s gloved hand and throwing it against the concrete wall, where it shattered into dozens of pieces.

"Get away from my daughter!" Clara screamed, shoving Harrison back against an IV pole, sending it clattering to the floor.

"Ms. Vance! You... how did you get down here?" Harrison stammered, backing away into the corner, his face pale with terror.

"Marcus, secure the technician's phone and lock the door from the inside!" Clara ordered.

Marcus quickly shut the door and jammed a metal chair under the handle, blocking anyone from entry.

Clara rushed to the bed. Lily was awake, her blue eyes wide with fear, crying softly as the alarm lights flashed. "Mommy? I'm cold..."

"I'm here, baby," Clara sobbed, wrapping her wet arms around her daughter and carefully unhooking the IV line from her tiny hand. She wrapped Lily in a warm blanket from the supply cabinet. "Mommy’s here. Nobody is ever going to hurt you again."

"Ms. Vance, listen to me," Harrison begged, raising his hands defensively. "I was just following orders! Julian threatened to revoke my medical license! He forced me to administer those compounds!"

"You took an oath to protect human life, Harrison," Clara said, her voice dripping with venom as she held Lily close. "You traded your soul for a luxury office and a high salary."

"I can help you!" Harrison offered desperately. "I have access to the master control server! I can give you the encrypted files proving Julian’s involvement in the illegal trials! The financial transfers, the offshore accounts, everything!"

Clara stared at him, her gaze cutting through him like a blade. "Where are the files?"

"They're stored on a secure flash drive inside the mainframe room down the hall," Harrison said quickly. "I keep a backup in case Julian ever tried to double-cross me. I’ll give it to you right now if you promise not to press charges against me!"

Clara looked at Marcus, then back at Harrison. "Get the drive. Right now. Or I let the police know you were the one holding the syringe."
