Chapter 14 - The Echo of the Past

By 4:00 AM, the storm outside had finally passed, leaving the night sky clear and washed clean. St. Jude Memorial Hospital was lit up like a Christmas tree, surrounded by dozens of emergency vehicles, news vans, and police cruisers.

Clara sat in a quiet private room on the pediatric floor. Lily was asleep in the bed, soundly resting under a clean white blanket, her breathing steady and peaceful. Her fever was completely gone.

Marcus walked into the room carrying two paper cups of hot coffee. He handed one to Clara and sat down silently in the chair next to her.

"How are you holding up?" Marcus asked gently.

Clara took a slow sip of the hot coffee, feeling the exhaustion settling deep into her bones. "I feel like I haven't slept in a week. But Lily is safe. That's all that matters."

Marcus looked down at his cup, his expression somber. "Clara... about what happened... about my involvement with Julian..."

Clara placed her hand over her brother's. "You made a mistake, Marcus. You were weak, and Julian took advantage of your desperation. But when it mattered most, you stood by me and helped save Lily."

"I'm going to resign as CFO," Marcus said softly. "I'm going to turn myself in to the prosecutor tomorrow morning and face whatever consequences come my way."

Clara shook her head firmly. "No, Marcus. The prosecutor reviewed the files. You never signed those illegal transfer authorizations. You were a whistleblower who helped bring down an illegal human testing ring. You aren't going to prison. You're going to help me fix this place."

Marcus looked at his sister, tears welling in his eyes. "You really forgive me?"

"Dad always taught us that family isn't about being perfect," Clara said, a soft smile finally breaking through her exhausted face. "It's about standing together when the storm hits."

Just then, the door opened, and Dr. Aris stepped into the room. He wore a clean white lab coat and held a clipboard.

"Ms. Vance," Dr. Aris said warmly. "I just wanted to give you an update on the patients from the sub-basement wing."

Clara stood up. "How are they, doctor?"

"All twelve patients have been transferred to our intensive care unit," Dr. Aris reported. "They are receiving proper medical care, detoxification treatments, and nutritional support. Their families are being contacted. Thanks to you, every single one of them is going to make a full recovery."

Clara let out a deep breath of profound relief. "Thank you, Dr. Aris. That is the best news I've heard all night."

"There's one more thing," Dr. Aris added, looking out the window toward the hospital courtyard below. "The news media has picked up the story. There are dozens of reporters outside wanting to speak to the CEO who exposed her own board to save her daughter."

Clara looked at her sleeping daughter, then turned to face the door.

"Tell them I'll be down in ten minutes," Clara said calmly. "It's time the public knows how St. Jude Hospital is going to change."
