Chapter 17 - Shadows Cleared

Three weeks later, the morning air was crisp and autumn-fresh. The city was still buzzing with news of the massive overhaul at St. Jude Memorial Hospital. Federal investigations had concluded, revealing the full extent of Julian Sterling’s network, leading to arrests across three different medical corporations nationwide.
Clara sat in her newly redesigned executive office on the top floor. The old dark mahogany furniture had been replaced with bright, warm oak, and giant glass windows allowed natural sunlight to flood every corner of the room.
A quiet knock came at the door, and Dr. Aris stepped in, wearing a bright smile and holding a tablet.
"Good morning, CEO Vance," Dr. Aris said warmly.
"Morning, Dr. Aris. Please, take a seat," Clara said, gesturing to the armchair across from her desk. "How are our recovery statistics looking?"
"Incredible," Dr. Aris reported enthusiastically. "Emergency room wait times have decreased by sixty percent since we restructured the triage workflow. Our new compassionate screening protocol has already treated over four hundred low-income patients this month alone who would have otherwise been turned away."
"And the patients from the sub-basement?" Clara asked, her tone tender.
"All twelve have been fully discharged," Dr. Aris answered, his eyes gleaming with satisfaction. "The foundation covered all their medical expenses, psychological counseling, and rehabilitation costs. Two of them—including Mr. Jenkins, the elderly gentleman you saw in cell three—have actually agreed to join our patient advocacy advisory board!"
Clara smiled deeply. "That’s amazing news, doctor. What about Lily's latest checkup?"
"Her bloodwork came back completely clean," Dr. Aris reassured her. "No residual traces of the toxin. Her immune system is strong, and she’s as energetic as ever."
"Thank God," Clara breathed, leaning back in her chair with a sense of genuine peace she hadn't felt in years.
Suddenly, Marcus walked into the office carrying a thick legal document. "Clara, the federal court just finalized the asset forfeiture against Julian Sterling and Arthur Pendelton."
"And?" Clara asked, sitting up.
"The court awarded forty-five million dollars in seized illegal assets directly to the St. Jude Charitable Foundation," Marcus announced triumphantly, dropping the document onto the desk. "We have enough funding to build three new free community clinics in the underserved districts of the city!"
Clara looked at the document, then out the window at the city below. "Father would be so proud of us, Marcus."
May you like
"He really would," Marcus agreed softly. "We turned a night of absolute horror into a legacy that will save tens of thousands of lives."
