Chapter 9 - The Master Drive

The mainframe server room was frigid, filled with the loud hum of dozens of tall computer racks flashing with blue and green LED lights. Water from the sprinkler system outside hadn't penetrated this sealed environment.
Dr. Harrison stood at the central console, his hands trembling violently as he typed in an eighteen-digit master decryption password. Clara stood right behind him, holding Lily securely on her hip, while Marcus kept watch at the glass door with a heavy metal wrench he’d grabbed from the hallway.
"Hurry up, Harrison," Clara demanded. "The emergency board meeting starts in ten minutes."
"I'm going as fast as I can!" Harrison whined. "The encryption key takes time to bypass..."
A green progress bar filled across the screen: *DECRYPTION COMPLETE - ACCESS GRANTED.*
Harrison pulled a black metallic USB drive from the server port and held it out with shaking hands. "Here. Everything is on this. The patient list, the financial ledger showing Julian’s shell companies, the blood analysis proving the toxin introduced into your child's drink... all signed with Julian’s digital signature."
Clara took the drive, her fingers tightening around the small piece of metal. This was the hammer that would shatter Julian Sterling’s empire into dust.
"Marcus," Clara said, tossing her brother the drive. "Upload these files directly to the federal prosecutor's secure portal from your tablet."
"On it," Marcus said, pulling out his high-security tablet and inserting the drive. "It's transmitting now. Five million megabytes of data... federal agents in Chicago and local state police will have access in three minutes."
Suddenly, the heavy glass door of the server room burst open.
Four armed men in elite corporate security uniforms stepped into the room, their weapons raised. Behind them walked Julian Sterling, wearing a fresh raincoat over his pristine suit, his face contorted in absolute rage.
"Remarkable, Clara," Julian said, his voice echoing in the cold server room. "I must admit, your resilience is truly irritating."
"It's over, Julian," Clara said, stepping forward, holding Lily behind her back. "The files have already been uploaded to the Department of Justice. Federal marshals are probably on their way here right now."
Julian’s eyes flickered with a brief flash of hesitation, but then he threw his head back and laughed—a cold, chilling sound.
"Do you really think federal agents move that fast, Clara?" Julian mocked, walking slowly into the room. "We are in the basement of a private facility. In less than five minutes, my security team can wipe these servers clean, burn this entire basement wing to the ground, and report that a tragic electrical fire broke out during the storm."
"You wouldn't dare burn down a hospital!" Marcus yelled.
"A hospital wing under renovation?" Julian corrected smoothly. "It happens all the time. Tragic accident. Poor wiring. The board will mourn the unfortunate loss of the CEO, her brother, and her child."
Julian gestured to his lead guard. "Execute them. Make it look like smoke inhalation."

The security guard raised his silenced pistol, aiming directly at Clara’s heart.
