Chapter 2 - The Mask Falls Off

The bell above the automatic doors chimed softly as Clara stepped back into the warmth of the emergency room lobby. Brenda was standing near the front desk, wiping down the counter where Clara’s hands had rested moments before. When she heard the doors open, Brenda turned around, her face twisted in annoyance.

"I told you to get—" Brenda started, her voice aggressive, but the words caught violently in her throat.

Clara walked with deliberate, powerful strides. The dirty hoodie was gone. The muddy pants were stacked on the curb outside. Standing before Brenda was a woman transformed—poised, razor-sharp, wearing a thousand-dollar suit, her presence commanding absolute authority. But it was the gold-embossed badge hanging around Clara’s neck that caught Brenda’s eyes.

Brenda’s eyes dilated in horror as she read the bold text: *CLARA VANCE, CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER & CHAIRWOMAN OF THE BOARD.*

"You... you're..." Brenda stammered, her face turning ash-grey. She dropped her disinfectant spray, and it clattered against the tile floor.

"Pick up those coins," Clara commanded. Her voice wasn't loud, but it carried a terrifying weight that echoed across the quiet lobby. Several patients waiting in the rows of chairs turned to watch.

"Ma'am... I mean, Ms. Vance... I had no idea—" Brenda stammered, trembling as she dropped to her knees on the floor, frantically scrambling to collect the scattered quarters and dimes she had shoved off the counter moments earlier.

"You had no idea who I was," Clara said, looking down at the kneeling nurse. "Which means if I were truly a homeless mother begging for my child's life, you would have let this little girl faint or suffer brain damage on the sidewalk outside."

"I was just following standard protocol regarding uninsured unhoused visitors!" Brenda pleaded, her voice shaking violently as she stood up, holding the dirty coins in her trembling palm. "Security rules state—"

"Standard protocol does not include physically putting your hands on a mother or sweeping money onto the floor like trash," Clara interrupted coldly. "Where is Dr. Harrison? Where is the Chief of Emergency Services?"

Before Brenda could answer, double doors at the back of the lobby swung open. Dr. Marcus Harrison, a tall man in his late fifties with slicked-back silver hair and an expensive gold wristwatch visible under his white lab coat, walked out. He looked flustered, holding an iPad.

"What is all this commotion in my lobby?" Dr. Harrison demanded, adjusting his glasses. "Brenda, why are people shouting—"

Harrison froze as his eyes landed on Clara. He had seen her picture in executive board memos for weeks leading up to her official takeover today.

"Ms. Vance!" Harrison choked out, quickly composing himself and offering a plastic smile. "Welcome to St. Jude Memorial! We weren't expecting you until the formal gala tomorrow evening. Please, let me show you to the executive suite—"

"Dr. Harrison," Clara cut him off instantly, holding Lily, who moaned softly against her neck. "My daughter has a dangerous fever and needs an immediate IV line, blood work, and pediatric evaluation. Are you going to treat her, or should I call an ambulance to take us to a rival facility and air this hospital's negligence on national television?"

Harrison’s face drained of color. "Of course! Right away! Nurse, clear Trauma Room 1 immediately! Call Dr. Aris in Pediatrics!"

Brenda practically tripped over her own feet running toward the intercom. "Code Pink prep in Trauma 1! Immediate response!"

Clara walked past Dr. Harrison without another word, her heels clicking rhythmically on the floor. As she passed him, she stopped briefly. "Dr. Harrison, secure Brenda’s security pass. She is suspended without pay pending an immediate board investigation."

Brenda gasped, sinking against the wall. "Ms. Vance, please! I have a family! I've worked here for seven years!"

Clara turned her head slightly, her gaze cold as ice. "And in those seven years, how many people died outside those doors because you judged them by their clothes?"

May you like

Without waiting for an answer, Clara carried her daughter through the double doors into the trauma bay.
