Chapter 4 - Shadows in the Corporate Corridor

The hospital’s executive wing on the top floor was quiet, a stark contrast to the chaotic emergency room below. Glass walls offered a sweeping view of the city skyline drenched in midnight rain. Clara sat behind her father's old oak desk, her laptop open, displaying financial spreadsheets that made her pulse race.

Lily was safely resting in a private pediatric room under 24-hour guard by security officers Clara trusted implicitly—men hired from an outside private security firm, not hospital staff.

A soft knock at the door broke the silence. Marcus Vance, Clara’s younger brother and the hospital's Chief Financial Officer, stepped into the room. He looked exhausted, dark circles bruised beneath his eyes.

"How is Lily?" Marcus asked, closing the heavy wooden door behind him.

"She’s sleeping. The antidote Dr. Aris administered is neutralizing the compound," Clara said, her voice tight. She looked at her brother. "Marcus, look at these numbers. The emergency department’s operating budget has been cut by forty percent over the last year, yet billing for patient admissions has doubled."

Marcus sighed, leaning against the desk and staring at the floor. "I told you not to come back here, Clara. I told you on the phone yesterday to stay in Chicago."

"This is our father's legacy, Marcus!" Clara said, standing up. "He built St. Jude to help people. Now I come back and find our triage nurses throwing sick kids into the storm, while millions of dollars are vanishing into shell companies!"

"You don't understand how deep this goes," Marcus whispered, his voice trembling. "Julian Sterling didn't just take over the board when Dad died. He bought off half the department heads. He’s converting St. Jude into an exclusive, high-fee private facility for wealthy international clients. Anyone who can't pay upfront is turned away or funneled into dangerous clinical trials."

Clara felt a sickening knot tie in her stomach. "Clinical trials? What kind of trials?"

"Off-the-books pharmaceutical testing," Marcus revealed, tears glistening in his eyes. "They use the unregistered, poor patients who come through the ER—people like the woman Brenda thought you were. They offer them 'free treatment' in the basement research wing, test unapproved drugs on them, and cover up any complications."

"My God..." Clara breathed, gripping the edge of the desk. "And the crash tonight? The toxin in Lily’s system?"

Marcus looked up, horror written across his face. "What crash? What happened to Lily?"

"Our car was side-swiped on Interstate 95," Clara explained, her eyes fixed on Marcus. "The driver sped off. When I got out to check Lily, her juice bottle had been opened in the back seat. She drank it right before she started burning up with fever. Someone poisoned her drink before we even left the hotel in Chicago!"

Marcus staggered back, slapping a hand over his mouth. "Julian... he knew you were bringing the audit files with you. He didn't want you to reach the hospital!"

"He tried to kill my daughter to keep me distracted," Clara said, her voice dropping to a terrifying whisper. "He wanted me grieving in a hospital room while he finalized the board vote to liquidate the charitable trust tomorrow morning."

"Clara, you have to run," Marcus begged, grabbing her arm. "They control everything here. The security guards, the board, the local police chief. If Julian realizes you know about the clinical trials, you won't make it out of this building alive!"

Clara slowly shook her arm free from Marcus’s grip. Her eyes burned with a dark, unyielding fire.

"I spent five years running this company's international division, Marcus," Clara said, her tone icy. "I'm not running anymore. Julian Sterling opened the gates of hell when he touched my daughter. Now he’s going to watch this entire empire burn down around him."

Suddenly, the lights in the office flickered and died, plunging the room into total darkness.
