Chapter 5 - Locked in the Dark

The heavy electronic lock on the office door clicked shut with a metallic thud. Red emergency backup lights flickered on along the ceiling, casting long, bloody shadows across the room.
"What's happening?" Marcus panicked, rushing to the heavy wooden door and rattling the handle. "It's locked! The electronic security system completely shut down the executive floor!"
Clara walked calmly to her desk and grabbed her phone. No signal. The cellular jammers had been activated.
"They're isolating us," Clara said smoothly. "Julian realized my auditing team started accessing the internal servers."
Over the office intercom, a static hiss echoed, followed by a smooth, cultured voice.
"Good evening, Clara," Julian’s voice echoed through the speaker. "I must apologize for the sudden inconvenience. A temporary security lockdown has been initiated due to an unexpected... technical anomaly."
"Julian," Clara said, looking up at the speaker camera in the corner of the ceiling. "You can't keep me locked in here forever. My security team is downstairs."
Julian chuckled, a sound devoid of any warmth. "Your private security guards were dismissed ten minutes ago, Clara. A anonymous report was filed claiming they were armed trespassers. The local police—who, as you know, are very well funded by our hospital foundation—are currently detaining them in the parking lot."
Marcus looked at Clara, panic turning his face pale. "I told you..."
"What do you want, Julian?" Clara asked calmly, refusing to show fear.
"I want what your father should have given me ten years ago," Julian replied coldly. "Full controlling interest in St. Jude Healthcare Systems. You hold thirty-five percent of the voting shares as CEO. Sign them over to my holding company, and you and your sweet little Lily can walk out of here untouched. You can go back to Chicago and live a quiet, wealthy life."
"And if I refuse?" Clara challenged.
A long pause hung over the intercom.
"If you refuse," Julian said softly, "Dr. Harrison will administer a secondary treatment to young Lily in her isolation room downstairs. An unfortunate reaction to her mysterious condition, I’m afraid. Children are so delicate, Clara. It would break my heart if she didn't survive the night."
Marcus gasped, slamming his fist against the wall. "You monster! She's four years old!"
Clara’s heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird, but her face remained carved from marble. "You won't kill her, Julian. Because if Lily dies, my shares automatically transfer into an irrevocable public trust managed by an independent law firm in New York. You'll never touch a single dime."
Silence stretched over the intercom line. Julian hadn't factored that into his calculations. Her father’s estate planning had been air-tight.
"You always were sharp, Clara," Julian finally said, his voice dropping the playful tone, replaced by raw malice. "Fine. Then you will stay in that office while the board holds an emergency vote in thirty minutes to declare you mentally incapacitated due to the stress of your daughter’s sudden illness. Marcus will sign the proxy papers on your behalf."
"I will never sign anything for you, Julian!" Marcus shouted at the speaker.
"Oh, you will, Marcus," Julian murmured softly. "Or should I remind you about the offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands? The ones with your digital signature attached to three million dollars of embezzled hospital funds? You sign the proxy, or you go to federal prison for twenty years."
Marcus froze. He looked at Clara, his eyes filled with overwhelming shame and tears. "Clara... I... I didn't know what they were doing... they set me up..."
Clara looked at her brother, feeling a deep pang of betrayal, but she didn't have time for despair.
"Thirty minutes, Clara," Julian said. "Enjoy the view."

The intercom cut off with a harsh click.
