Chapter 15 - The Public Reckoning

The sun was just beginning to rise over the city, casting golden rays of morning light across the glass front entrance of St. Jude Memorial Hospital. A massive crowd of reporters, camera crews, medical staff, and concerned citizens had gathered in the courtyard.
Clara walked out through the double glass sliding doors—the exact doors she had been thrown out of just twelve hours earlier. She wore a simple, elegant dark suit, her hair neatly styled, her expression calm and powerful. Beside her stood Marcus and Dr. Aris.
Flashbulbs popped instantly, and dozens of microphones were thrust forward as Clara stepped up to the podium set up on the concrete plaza.
"Ms. Vance! Ms. Vance!" a female reporter from NBC News shouted. "Is it true that senior board members were conducting illegal medical experiments in the hospital basement?"
"Ms. Vance! How did you discover the corruption on your first day as CEO?" another journalist called out.
Clara raised her hand, silencing the noisy crowd. The courtyard fell completely still.
"Twelve hours ago," Clara began, her voice echoing clearly through the loudspeakers, "I walked through these front doors carrying my sick four-year-old daughter. I was dressed in dirty clothes from a roadside emergency. I had no insurance card, only fifty dollars in silver coins in my pocket."
The crowd murmured in surprise.
"And when I begged for help," Clara continued, her eyes scanning the crowd, "the staff at that front desk swept my money onto the floor and forced me out into the freezing rain. They judged me by my clothes. They judged my daughter's life by our appearance."
Gasps rippled through the gathering crowd of reporters and staff.
"What I discovered last night was not just an isolated act of cruelty," Clara said firmly. "It was a symptom of a deep rot that had taken hold of this institution—a rot driven by corporate greed, where profit was valued above human dignity, culminating in the horrific abuse of vulnerable human beings in our sub-basement."
Clara paused, looking directly into the main television camera lens.
"Today, that rot ends," she declared passionately. "Julian Sterling, Arthur Pendelton, and their conspirators are currently in federal custody. The illegal trial wing has been shut down permanently, and every victim is receiving world-class medical care at our expense."
The crowd began to applaud softly, growing stronger by the second.
"Effective immediately," Clara announced, "St. Jude Healthcare Systems is establishing the *Vance Foundation Dignity Protocol*. No patient—regardless of race, background, financial standing, or appearance—will ever be turned away from our emergency rooms. We will institute a mandatory zero-tolerance policy for discriminatory staff behavior, starting today."
The applause exploded into a resounding ovation. Staff members in scrubs cheered, and reporters frantically typed away on their laptops.
"My father built this hospital on a simple truth," Clara concluded, her voice thick with emotion. "Healthcare is not a luxury for the rich. It is a fundamental human right. And as long as I am CEO, St. Jude will be a sanctuary for everyone who needs healing."
As Clara stepped back from the podium, she saw a familiar face standing in the back of the crowd, handcuffed and flanked by two police officers.
