Chapter 7 - Infiltrating the Sub-Basement

The bottom of the secret stairwell ended at a heavy steel door marked with a yellow biohazard symbol. Clara pushed the heavy bar handle down slowly, easing the door open an inch.

The air in the sub-basement was cold and damp, smelling heavily of chemical antiseptics and metallic rust. Unlike the bright, sterile floors above, this corridor was dimly lit with flickering yellow strip lights. Piping ran across the bare concrete ceiling.

"This area was supposed to be decommissioned three years ago," Marcus whispered over Clara’s shoulder. "The board reported to the city that it was being used strictly for archival paper storage."

"It looks like anything but paper storage," Clara said quietly.

She stepped into the hallway, her high heels making no sound on the soft rubber floor runner. Marcus followed close behind. They moved quietly past several locked steel doors with narrow reinforced glass windows.

Clara peeked into the first window. Inside was a small, windowless room containing three hospital cots. On one cot sat an elderly man in hospital scrubs, staring blankly at a wall, an IV line attached to his arm labeled with a handwritten series of numbers instead of a patient name.

"They're stripping away their identities," Clara whispered, horror tightening her chest. "No names, no patient charts. If these people die, they simply vanish."

"It's worse than I thought," Marcus muttered, clutching his head. "Julian was taking money from a rogue European pharmaceutical company to test untested neurological drugs. They pay millions per trial because the FDA refused approval."

"We need the master hard drive from the lab control room," Clara said, pointing down the hall toward a door labeled *REMAIN CLEAR - RESEARCH LAB 4*.

As they approached the door, the sound of heavy footsteps echoed down the corridor. Clara grabbed Marcus’s coat and pulled him into a dark recessed alcove holding spare oxygen tanks.

Two security guards in black tactical uniforms walked past, armed with stun batons and sidearms.

"Did you check room 104?" one guard asked.

"Yeah, the kid's in there," the second guard replied, tossing a keycard up and catching it. "Dr. Harrison’s prep team is setting up the IV now. As soon as Sterling gives the order from the boardroom, they’ll push the secondary dose."

Clara’s blood ran cold. Lily was down here! They hadn't left her in Pediatrics; they had moved her to the sub-basement while Clara was locked in the office!

"We have to get that keycard," Clara whispered to Marcus as the guards turned the corner toward the far end of the hallway.

"Are you crazy?" Marcus panicked. "They’re armed! We can't take on two security guards!"

"We don't have to fight them," Clara said, her eyes narrowing as she spotted a red fire alarm box on the wall beside them. "We just need to make them run."

Clara reached into her suit jacket, pulled out her heavy metal executive pen, and used it to smash the glass cover of the fire alarm. She pulled the lever down with all her strength.

Instantly, deafening alarm sirens wailed through the sub-basement, and bright red strobe lights began flashing violently. Overhead emergency sprinklers erupted, showering cold water down across the entire corridor.

"What the hell?" one guard yelled, running back down the hall toward the alarm box.

As the guard rounded the corner, Clara stepped out from the shadows holding a heavy steel fire extinguisher she had pulled off the bracket. With a powerful swing, she struck the guard across the chest, knocking him flat onto the slick concrete floor.

The keycard flew from his hand, sliding across the wet floor right to Marcus’s feet.
